Militarize or don’t just get a good boyfriend.

I gotta agree that throwing shit out of the bag is the worst interaction in the game, so common and distractingly unintuitive that it makes me think “these controls suck ass” even though most of them are honestly good or fine, haha.

I always get the order of button presses wrong and then just start going back and forth between the D pad and the other buttons until the thing throws. Not great for combat!

fucked up i didn’t get a korok for this

I’ve played a few hours of this now.
Stuck a Wheel to my sword, a barrel to my shield and a ladle to my spear and I’m good to go.

I’ve spent way too much time trying to make wonky wagons to travel faster along roads, only to accidentally send them rolling away down hills and me chasing them until they fly off a cliff.

Also spent way too long trying to build a ramp to launch a korok on a glider over a river, only to give up and just carry him across

Curiosity got the better of me so I saved the princess and now she wants us to talk about our day.

You and I are playing the same videogame.

I’m usually half a second too slow to activate Rewind in situations like this, but let me tell you, those times I DO get the Rewind off feel so good.

I mostly just forget that Rewind is even there until a situation comes up that heavily telegraphs that you need it.

Kinda disappointed that after I painstakingly built a bridge to get over a river my horse absolutely refuses to step one hoof on any construction materials

I dunno y’all, now that I am about 20-30 hours in and all of the charm of the new game systems have run out and I am into the drudgery of actually playing BoTW again and recollecting all the same outfits and solving the same patronizing puzzles for 12-year-olds and fighting the same enemies over and over again while driving goofy vehicles that control like total ass and are only fun to use long enough for a tik tok video, I think I am now fully back to hating not only Zelda but maybe video games all together(!?) if even the normally Zelda-skeptic SBers are telling me this thing is actually that good.

Like I have been waiting to upgrade my PS3 until I get certain life things in order but I have been looking forward to playing Elden Ring and some other modern non-Nintendo games soon (even my switch is mostly a Mario party machine for new years with the in-laws), but if people who played Elden Ring find this game impressive then maybe Elden Ring is really not going to do anything to impress me either, because the magic of this one has fallen off real quick.

Elden Ring is better than this… right? Or am I, now at 41, just maybe not a video game guy anymore?

Tears of the Kingdom is like doing a degree. You get kinda bored of it after the first third but then if you persevere you do actually get more out of it even if you don’t really love the subject anymore. Reminds me of the valley of shit when I did my thesis.

I think it’s perfectly fine to quit the game if you’re not feeling it. There is a lot of busywork in it and it becomes pure podcast fuel after a certain point, but it is very pleasant to play with.

The Legend of Zelda: Valley of Shit

Yeah I get that but this is one of the worst valley of shit’s I’ve ever felt in a video game. Fr fr. I’m stumbling around the depths and there is nothing interesting here it all (all the same enemies on the surface but they are red, cool, oh hey another ninja pretending to be a civilian in need, wow), I did one of the four divine beast dungeons whatsits and the thought of doing 3 more (when I’ve already done 5!) is filling me with more dread than anything my actual job does (and my job SUCKS), nothing on this ever expanding quest list sounds any more inspired than what you’d find on a Chinese mobile game (there is one particular I have in mind, maybe you can guess), just going to yellow dots, collecting all the things, is this all video games are ever going to be?

I just met a lady who was like “find all 58 caves in hyrule!” and that was when I turned off the game and made the above post lol just like cmon seriously whoever made that quest is like daring/begging us to stop playing, and they were right to do so (probably, I dunno, maybe I’m just not a game guy anymore)

I’m not gonna say it’ll get better for you if you play 40 more hours. I think it’s time to crash and burn.

In short, this game has me thinking about this classic article a lot

I can’t see myself playing this game for more than 70 hours tbh (that’s how much time I put into BotW before dropping it essentially forever)

i would definitely cut my losses with this game given your current appraisal

there are a lot of good video games that don’t ask for 100-150 hours of your time. if you aren’t enjoying the journey, i really doubt the destination is going to be at all revelatory

all that said, you should play some like, arcade stuff. play some galaga and alien vs. predator and sunset riders and pulstar and stuff, maybe. some real quarter-munchers. rinse this zelda goo off you. maybe that will help you recognize whether you hate games or hate zelda

I wouldn’t let anything you feel about Zelda dissuade you from playing Elden Ring unless you really hate maps and swords.

Edit: Is there a way to turn a post into a reply other than quoting?

yeah, for occupying the same space elden ring and botw/totk are really very far apart

if you do keep playing, i’d say at least try not to let things like the well/cave quests rub you the wrong way… that’s like getting irritated when professor oak asks you to complete the pokedex or whatever. they’re just ways to track things for the real freaks

I think horses have an innate fear of construction. I did a shrine quest where you have to show someone a big horse where after doing the taming prompt ended up in a pond with a sharp overhang and couldn’t get out. The horse would try to swim to get out but couldn’t and would “drown” and show back up on the other side. I tried to make a ramp but the pathing behavior made him keep avoiding it. So instead I just ultrahanded the ramp around him and scared him enough to run up and overcome the slope trapping him.

Ok honestly though I’m pretty sure it’s just Zelda lol. I actually had the chance to go to mikado a few weeks ago and play after burner climax and outrun 2 and had a swell time.

But it’s also not just that I hate Zelda, despite never really being a Zelda person. I actually quite liked BotW, so I thought I would like this one.

I admit there are some interesting mechanics here that pose a lot of interesting possibilities, so I get why people are excited about that aspect, but the game they built around those mechanics is really lacking imho. I have no interest in revisiting any of these locations from BotW. I already spent a 100 hours in that world. And the sky and depth areas are like, really, really barren (at least in the 1/3rd I’ve seen so far)
