For Super Slim you do what is called PS3 HEN, which means you turn on and off the exploit. The steps I took literally yesterday were:
USB stick in FAT32
Wired controller because my dual shock 3 went fucking nuts
Ps3 connected to the internet and at least one PSN account assigned to the console
Download exploitable custom firmware
Install from USB stick
Launch website and click on some things
Done
On PC download Multiman, ?reacted?, ps3pkgi + two text files
Install the pkgs with package manager
Go into multiman and copy paste the text files to a specific location
Now I have unlimited blockbuster pass to PSN (kind of clumsy but I am really only after a few things)
psn games on the internet come in pkg files and then there is an additional .rap file needed to sign the game to the console. I could get these files independently to work for two games but not for Outrun. There is one additional file type but I haven’t run into it.
MULTIMAN: file browser
?Reacted?: not sure of the name, will double check if interested. Allows you to sign .rap files, you could theoretically grab 4000 rap files and sign every single game/dlc/etc in existence to your console at one time
Pkgi: once installed located in your internet tab, lets you go to blockbuster whenever you want. Have to download/install things one at a time with a reboot between each.
I think this method applies to Phat and Slim but also those can be fully jailbroken. Checking the channels I just linked for other methods.
There’s a different version of the pkgi that also lets you grab ps1 and ps2 and psp games. The consensus seems to be the internal PS2 emulator is janky but I haven’t thought of what I’d like to throw at it just to see. The PSP environment (not emulation, exactly) is apparently very janky and again, once I think of the appropriate game to try and throw at it I will.
Really recommend pulling your ps3 out just to hack it because it is fucking horseshit you have to phone home for your digital games and I’ll do the same thing the second I can for the ps4. I managed to do everything in a day while being a parent. I figure an hour to double check multiple guides for your ps3 model and maybe 15 minutes of actual work. I had to run the website exploit about 4 times.
install something called ps2cv on your modded ps3 and you won’t even need to copy your rental files over. just get them directly on the console
also, every time i have tried to play a ps2 game, whether from disc or installed, my ps3 quickly became louder than a vacuum cleaner. so i don’t do that anymore
Ps2cv is a fork that caused PS3Hacking drama but is more for community made pkgs of PS2-1-P games while PKGi is the one connecting Blockbuster with PSN.
For anyone weird enough to be into legal emulation, jailbroken PS3s are great because you can use them to
dump/rip your digital/physical PS3 games; these can then be played on PC in RPCS3
buy and dump PS1 and PS2 games–hundreds of which are still on the PS3 PS Store, especially the Japanese one; these can then be extracted and played on PC in the PS1/PS2 emulator of your choice
I jailbroke mine back on 4/20/24 following the same video as Rudie, have been logged in ever since, and have not been banned. (Don’t remember if I logged out while following the video, I just did whatever the video said.) I’ve still been buying stuff off both the US and J PS3 PS Stores.
There was one time after the jailbreak where I did get logged out and couldn’t seem to log back in and I thought oh they got me oh well–but nope it was just some temporary thing, was able to log back in a few minutes later.
Which is not to say it couldn’t happen some day. I’ve decided I’m done with being stuck on proprietary hardware so I’d be okay with it. I didn’t jailbreak the PS3 until I’d reached that point. Not that I came across tales of people getting banned by Sony for jailbreaking or anything so I don’t know if it even happens, but I thought it possibly might, who knows.
If Sony banning you would bother you you might want to hold off.
