i bet sun araw loves this album
remember to remember me, standing still in your past, floating fast like a hummingbird
been listening to this song A Lot. And the album. It’s like a summer night of an album. It’s so cozy.
“I love hot nights”
Crossposting from the thread where I’m listening to all my old CDs because this one always makes me want to listen to it a few times in a row
i was really into this album back in 2002 or 2003 or so. so much that i had them play the entirety at the outdoor pool that i lifeguarded at that mostly played really bad radio pop music very loud.
I only just learned about it from that E6 doc you logged on letterboxd not too long ago. NMH is my only E6 exposure. Next to the music tapes, this seemed like the most promising record highlighted in that doc. And I think it’s pretty great!
Someone should make an E6 20 Big Ones thread.
yes. everyone needs to make 20 big ones!!! everyone’s got an artist they like 20 songs of!!
there’s still a lot of E6 i’m not familiar with but i know there are at least a few other fans on this forum - maybe @OneSecondBefore?
i would consider doing a Kate Bush 20 Big Ones thread though, i feel like i have a good enough grasp of her recorded output
I could do, uh… Metallica. Or Weird Al
do it do it do it do it!!!
No the point of me saying that was to emphasize how awful it would be
it doesn’t matter I like it when people post and talk about music they like!! do it!!
I am a huge Elephant 6 fan, yeah!
IMO this is the best album any band in that collective released:
It’s mostly the same people as that Circulatory System album (Olivia Tremor Control broke up and then a bunch of the members formed Circulatory System). But OTC had Bill Doss in it, and I think his contributions helped elevate things beyond Circulatory System’s peaks.
Everything Olivia Tremor Control ever did is worth your time. Same with Circulatory System. Neutral Milk Hotel is pretty good. Apples in Stereo are very fun bubblegum pop, sort of low-fi 90’s indie ELO worship (check out “Discovery of a World inside the Moone” and “Her Wallpaper Reverie”). Of Montreal has some fun stuff but my appreciation for them has diminished over time (Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies is hard to recommend, but nothing sounds like it, a goofy ass nickelodeon cartoon of an album… Sunlandic Twins is probably the actual one to recommend, and of course the fan favorite Hissing Fauna). A Hawk and a Hacksaw is inessential but has some cool ambient folky stuff. None of the other bands are especially exciting to me.
i’d also recommend the Music Tapes For Clouds and Tornadoes album
sorry i can only find a 240p version of this song on youtube lol
it’s Julian Koster from NMH’s album. not as essential as NMH or Olivia Tremor Control but i still like it a lot.
and this is my favorite Of Montreal album. it’s sort of a like a descent into madness and had a very spiteful hysterical energy that is very opposite of the uplifting energy of Elephant 6 is about, but i think stands out from his other albums (maybe other than Hissing Fauna). more people should really check it out in my opinion!!
I remember enjoying Paralytic Stalks a lot when it came out. I worked at a coffee shop and I used to have fun playing it on the in-store speakers for customers. I got away with a lot of inadvisable music choices there. I haven’t gone back to the album in ages, maybe I should give it a go. I also liked False Priest a LOT when it came out but I’m too scared to go back to it, lol. I thought Lousy With Sylvianbriar was a surprisingly solid turn toward like country-rock.
I saw Music Tapes open for Olivia Tremor Control live, and they were great. I never got into the albums though. I also saw Koster perform his “Singing Saw at Christmas Time” stuff (good novelty album imo) along with a cover of a William Basinski piece at a tiny house show in Geneseo, NY once. That was really cool. Talked to him for a while about Brian Eno.
my main musical complaint about Of Montreal is the songs just feel tend to feel overwritten and the lyrics too flowery and stupid. and having an album just stay on one emotional note (mostly spite lol) and descend into ambient noise halfway through really manages to move in different artistic territory away from the usual things i find obnoxious about Of Montreal.
but then i also do like Hissing Fauna for similar reasons. Kevin Barnes in this mode has a similar sort of Red House Painters energy to me where i’m like “i’m enjoying the vibe of where this is taking me but this does not seem like the work of a good person” lol
Yeah their lyrics are so bad most of the time, lol. Kevin Barnes seems like the worst hang in the world. Paralytic Stalks was cool the way it played with structure, agreed.
