points of interest:
-street fighter alpha 3 making the list, but not 2, which is more popular in the west
-every breath of fire makes the list, proving that there are people outside of sb who love v
-inexplicably, 925 people voted for the western devil may cry game
-play god hand, my siblings
-actually, a lot of dead series are fully represented: rival schools, megaman legends, darkstalkers
-not much from before the mid-90s, just final fight and early megamans
Rockman 1 being directly above Rockman 2 is an odd thing to see.
i would never have expected dino crisis to score that high, what gives
Looks like these are the global results, the Japan-specific results are a subset.
Yeah, I cannot understand why Dino Crisis is so high. I wonder when the last time people who voted for it actually played a Dino Crisis? Those weren’t even fun when they were new, and they weren’t fun to go back to. I think this comes down to the lasting power of a good protagonist design and people’s ability to remember things as a lot better than they actually were.
I never understood the appeal of Breath of Fires outside of 5, either, but people who like RPGs like RPGs even if they have absolutely no flavor to them, so, whatever.
There were about 250k respondents so only 4% of them voted for Dino Crisis.
It looks like the polling design gave series with few or no sequels a structurally higher rank because their fanbase didn’t spread out their votes across many games.
i’ve seen it suggested on twitter that the dino crisis votes are “give us a sequel” protest votes.
dino crisis 2 is an excellent game imo. the first was just dinosaur resident evil, but the second used the prerendered backgrounds of resident evil, but made an all-out action game with them. (though crisis city was the first game to do this afaik)
the first two breath of fires might not have had much flavour, but iii and iv definitely do. they have their own collection of fantasy races that neither look nor feel like renamed elves and dwarves and so on, iii has some incredible pixelart, iv has that plus some really nice low poly models plus a world inspired by china and south east asia that was pretty unique at tge time and still rare now.
they both also have some interesting mechanics, but it’s the flavour that was called into question here
the world continues its psyop against Capcom that they actually like Power Stone and would buy a new one
i like power stone, but after how thoroughly repulsive street fighter v was i don’t trust 2020s capcom to make a new fighting game that i want to buy and play
That’s funny…earlier I was going to say that I haven’t played almost any of the games in that list, but I did really enjoy Phoenix Wright and Okami, so I guess now I feel like I’m part of some sort of mass audience which is kind of comforting in a way. I also went on the Japanese-language Wikipedia earlier and tried to figure out why the first Dino Crisis was apparently so beloved, and was kind of surprised to find that it gets sort of scanty coverage there, but I guess maybe it’s actually more popular internationally and maybe that’s the reason why. (As a funny aside, both the English- and Japanese-language Wikipedia articles describe it as Resident Evil with dinosaurs more or less, but the English one is more cagey, saying e.g. “Critics drew heavy comparisons to Resident Evil, with some describing it as ‘Resident Evil with dinosaurs’,” while the Japanese one just says outright, “It is classified as survival horror, but although the controls and camera and so on are practically identical to the Resident Evil series from the same developer, the zombies have been swapped for dinosaurs.” [“サバイバルホラーに分類され、操作や視点などの機能は同社から発売されていた『バイオハザードシリーズ』とほぼ同じだが、敵がゾンビではなく恐竜に変わっている。”])
Speaking of, I’ve never played Resident Evil 4 but it’s one of Lily’s all-time favs and what I do know about it makes it seem extremely funny to me, so I guess this is another reminder that I should play it sometime.
I’m sure you’ve gotten this impression enough from sb’s reaction to resident evil 7/8 and to SF6 and DMC5 and DD2 but Street Fighter V was like their last tonally and conceptually “off” game and they’ve been cranking out really likable hits ever since
i haven’t paid much attention to them, other than re 7 and 8, but this is definitely good to know!
Oh yeah, the gulf between the first impression feel of Street Fighter 6 versus the staggering disappointment of launch Street Fighter V is impossible to overstate.
Anyway I voted in this back when they did it. Had to get my votes in for Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, and Mega Man Legends. Just to set myself up for disappointment.
SFV at 99 is pretty funny. Shocked it made the list at all. I typed that earlier but didn’t post it. 6 is great and it probably has something for anyone who’s ever liked Street Fighter. Except for pixel art. But you can play the old games in the Battle Hub so I guess that’s there too.
wild to see marvel 2 ahead of every fighting game besides sf6 and 3S on a japanese list
and yeah A3 is much more popular than A2 in japan
some of the answers to the question “What was the first Capcom game you played?” strain credulity:
the breakdown of the question by generation is interesting at least, especially the column for folks in their 50s and 60s:
hell if I know what the first capcom game I played was, who remembers that kind of shit
It was Trojan and I was grossed out by Captain Commando, I thought he looked weird and I did not appreciate how they were trying to market to me, a small child, I objected to it greatly, you might say I was precocious
I think probably the first one I played was one of of the Marvel vs. Capcom games in an arcade, but I also remember playing 1942/3 in MAME around the same time and I’m not really sure which I did first.
