I’ve come around and accepted that I am no longer someone who is a GM out of necessity, but someone who likes to be the GM. And the urge is upon me once again….!
It’s weird. I never really jive as a player. Might be that the groups I GM for are tighter knit where as ever since high school I’ve always been the new guy friend of a friend as a player.
I find that a lot of TTRPG groups are more about the role playing than the game, and the structure of most games doesn’t really lend to letting people know about you, so then the role playing is harder.
I’ve been running Mothership lately. It’s the first game I’ve played referee for, but it’s truly so much fun. I thought I might not like this role but it’s actually very rewarding and fun. I’m still playing, just playing in a different role than I’m used to. Today I ran my first proper session with a pre-written module for my partner and her family. These were new players, unfamiliar with TTRPGs and when I told them “just ask questions and tell me what you want to do” they got it immediately. I think MoSh really helps onboard the referee, or Warden, as it is called in Mothership. It’s so well-designed and so easy to grasp. Next I’ll be running a series of one-shots for a TTRPG discord I’m part of and then I’ll start a campaign when the current OSE campaign I play in closes in the Autumn. It’s kind of crazy, I thought I would never be able to GM but it’s so doable with MoSh!! I’m having a blast.
Started blogging about tabletop stuff. OSR and NSR mostly. Im going to be tracking my development as someone new to the hobby, reflecting on modules Ive ran, posting monsters and worldbuilding shit. Might do play reports and journal entries from shit I play in.
Has anyone played FIST?
this game looks sick
you can get a print on demand copy of maid rpg from amazon for really cheap! i have it, but have never played it. there’s a lot of interesting random tables in there
Kinda wanna get a copy of that Maid rpg to do a compare and contrast to My Life With Master, one of my all time faves.
Theyre totally different and back when the translation first came out, a lot of folks on story-games made the mistake of playing maid like it was mlwm and had a bad time.
I think maid is a fantastic comedy rpg so long as you don’t play with anime creeps. It is a lot more like toon rpg than any other game
Can I get a rundown on the Justin Alexander controversy? I heard he’s not cool re representation especially trans rep but I’ve also heard he was friends with Janelle Jacquays? I see his name a lot and kind feel the ick but don’t know exactly why
editted
if there was jason alexander controversy i think i’d know about it
If you mean Justin Alexander from the blog “The Alexandrian”, i don’t think they were friends. He coined a term using her surname to describe a type of dungeon design - “Jaquaysing the Dungeon”, except he forgot the S in the middle.
Then when she transitioned he made a weird post about how it was a hassle / rewriting history (or something) to explain why he didn’t change her old name to her new one on his blog.
Then later on he said how he was quite happy to change the name if she asked him to.
Then she did ask him to, and he didn’t get around to it for five years.
Then he had a book coming out, and changed the term to “Xandering the Dungeon” for what he claimed were legal reasons, and changed his old blog posts to name the term after himself instead of after her.
He made a bunch of almost reasonable sounding blog posts about all this, but for me the key thing was his actions - ie. not bothering to change things when asked. Idk if he is anti-trans or not, or just kind of a dick.
(i may have got some of the fine detail wrong, eg. i can’t remember what she asked him to change, whether it was her dead name or restoring the S into Jaquaysing. all the stuff above took place over like 10 years or something.)
I should have realized that ttrpgs are just like video games and I should avoid all discourse about them anywhere but SB. I’m glad it didn’t occur to me to look up stuff about them online until like two years ago.
it seems more akin to scifi/fantasy/litfic community drama. less commodity fetishizing and overt grunting sexism, more petty cliquey shit and subtle grunting sexism lol. and y’know racism homophobia white supremacy all shot thru its core boy “geek spaces” suck
imo the most generous read of Justin Alexander is he’s an opportunist and an insensitive clod. he obviously genuinely respects Janelle Jaquays as a dungeon/level designer and makes a great case for her work (it is a good article i have read many times). but its tellingly shitty of him that he showed noticeably less respect to her as a person he had to credit and actually interact with, especially following her transition, and that he capitalized on the decade-old analysis he wrote inspired by her design when she was unaware because she was like, busy dying
Anyway let’s play Maid at a sbmeetup sometime.
