Xanathar's Guide to Cleavin' a Goblin Clean in Twain (feat. D&D)

I came here for non dnd and non d20 fantasy gaming and I get 24xxlikes. Very cool. Will look at that later tonight

Reading the new edition of savage worlds and I think it’s going to be what I reach for when the urge to run 5e hits again. “What if a very trad but functional game had decent combat and a quarter of the complexity” is a very compelling argument for any game that doesn’t have actually interesting rules.

Like I would use this over the currently in-print rules for nearly any generic licensed game. It’s just plain fucking easier and gives you the same bang for your buck. Maybe more in most cases.

The miniatures focus is a selling point for me even!

Jesus this is like the 90s post white wolf proliferation, and the d20 proliferation, all over again.

Tabletop rpg producers are scrambling to put out as much stuff with a big name on it as possible and I cannot fathom barely any of it being good.

The rpg market crash is going to be brutal. There is no way this shit is sustainable.

this is, at least, a translation of an existing game from 2004, and i would like to see more japanese games being tranlsated. be nice if more of them weren’t tie-ins to videogames or anime, though.

Oh it actually is a translation of a Japanese language book this time!?

yes! and while searching to verify that, i also found they announced three other translations:
wares blade, a dunbine-looking game from 1988 (apparently the first in a line of older games they’re launching called “legends of japan”?)
resize_cover-3
steam build riders, on which i can find no information, so maybe it had a different title in japan?

and a “dark fairytale” game, kedamono opera, which will have a kickstarter launched later this year

exciting~

OS Japanese R amirite?

I feel like TTRPGs have leveled up a lot since the early 2000s. Pretty interesting to see this kind of stuff come out. Besides sword world what Japanese ttrpg are well known?

i don’t know! i know that call of cthulhu is the most popular ttrpg in japan, according to legend.

and i know that japanese ttrpgs that have received translations already include:

ryuutama - nice rpg about travelling, enduring the elements and landscape, heavy emphasis on inventory management

tenra bansho zero - action-heavy game set in steampunk wwi fuedal japan in space. amusingly, has a spin-off game set in the same universe that hasn’t been translated

kamigakari - dangerously chuuni game about people in secret organisations secretly hunting evil gods in modern japan with their secret powers

convictor drive - kinda tokusatsu inspired game about power armoured “heroes” fighting “terrorists” in a capitalist dystopia

summon skate - weird concept game about characters who draw glyphs on the ground with ice skates (or roller blades, scooters, wheelchairs, etc.) to summon gods and fight great old ones

floria - another weird concept game about drawing shapes, this time to grow herbs in a world completely covered in a magical forest

shinobigami - a combination rpg/social deduction game. characters are secretly ninja in modern japan. every player has a mission and a secret. the missions are stuff like “kill this player” “find this player’s secret”, and so on.

I probably mentioned it earlier in this thread but the local Barnes and Noble had something called like Troll Slayer or something in that ballpark and I almost nabbed it out of curiosity but then my anime clueless self looked up the series or the comic it was adapted from and realized it was for total creeps.

Goblin Slayer? Is that a creepy one? I only watch Delicious in Dungeon (and I want it as a TTRPG please help thanks)

goblin slayer is the creepy one, i forgot that had a ttrpg that’s been translated. an isekai anime called konosuba also has a translated ttrpg.

i think delicious in dungeon has a japan-only board game

did Terra the Gunslinger ever get translated?

A couple years back, for free rpg day there was an English version of a solo adventure from the Japanese version of Tunnels and Trolls available.

I think the alternate art was the only thing of note there though.

How can you post that without sharing any of the art??

There’s surprisingly not much about it online. I’ll have to dig out my copy.

In addition:

Double Cross - modern day superheroes rpg about characters infected with viruses that give them powers; if they use their powers too often, they’ll become GM controlled monsters. Scene-based system (as is common with japanese games)

Witch Quest - Kiki’s Delivery Service the RPG

Golden Sky Stories (Yuuyake Koyake) - RPG about cutesy animal spirits helping people out, had an expansion focused on Yokai

Meikyuu Kingdom - Court politics and kingdom management rpg set in an infinite mega-dungeon, fantasy comedy tone
