At work I’ve been using pencils a lot lately for notetaking. Nothing special, literally just whatever pencils I’ve had lying around. Mostly, it’s because it seems to never fail that when I need to take a note quickly while I’m on the phone with someone, the first pen I reach for will fail to write. Pencils don’t let me down as often. Well, regular pencils. I find mechnical pencils frustrating because I guess I press down hard when I write so I break the lead constantly.
tired of the big notebook big pen meta? why not try tiny notebook tiny pen!
(lactase pill for scale)
There are now clicky fountain pens that cost less than $100. There’s this from writech:
It writes fine!
And jinhao is making a cheap copy of the Vanishing Point. I haven’t tried that one.
officially Middle Aged as I now have three fountain pens inked with a safe staid boring blue-black

Pilot Kakuno [ef]

Kaweco AL Sport [ef]
and TWSBI ECO [stub italic]

i tried using a Kakimori Potari ink but the leuchtturm notebook I was using realllly didn’t like it, so i just went with this setup. each nib size is slightly different so when i get bored of one i switch to another. this has been my a5 journaling setup basically.
for my a6 notebook that I carry around it’s this setup. leuchtturm with pen loop, sakura micron pn in purple, ‘pilot frixion light natural color’ highlighter
My boss at work just got into pens and I blew his mind by knowing what a Lamy Safari was. He gifted me one, it is pretty nice, at least compared to the average Bic
nice!
i stopped using my safari because it fits a little weird in my hand, i guess i didn’t get along with the grip section / weight. otherwise it’s a great pen and low-stress.
i haven’t really honed in on ‘the one’ yet. so far i’ve figured out some priorities: - good ink filling (smooth piston / push button) - lightweight or weight-balanced - smooth wet writer - fine to medium nib, bonus if replaceable - not finicky or fussy (i use pigment inks) - looks and feels good
i’ve been looking at pen videos again and now i think it would be cool to have one made out of ultem. i have a guitar pick in ultem and it’s a great feeling material, and apparently ultem is easy to clean with rubbing alcohol
