And not a single date for California. I’d make the trip down to San Jose for this, throw me a bone here.
Kind of curious what the modern SM stage shows are about; I suspect because of the age of the series they just adapt manga arcs straight now. Back in the period between the end of the anime and the start of the live action show the stage plays were the only new Sailor Moon media, so they’d invent new rogues galleries out of whole cloth, or send the cast on a time travel trip back to the Edo period.
I also just became aware that there’s a recent stage adaptation of Umineko being done, and they’re getting to Episode 5 in February. Would love to know how to watch these; Episode 1 is on youtube/the archive, but I think I’d want to start Umineko again at Episode 2. And I really want to see Erika in live action.
Yeah, why don’t these things ever come to DC? That’s the nation’s capitol!
But yeah, this actually did come to DC many years ago and I managed to go to it. All the JP stage shows have storylines but the international tour eschewed a story and just had singing. Probably so you didn’t have to read a lot of subtitles, even though there was a screen with subtitles for the singing. I was very, very sad.
Watched episode 2 of Umineko on the archive, was pretty easy to follow thanks to being familiar with the events of the game. Beatrice and Maria were both cast for their laugh, and nail it. Also loved how the red text was handled by stage hands holding up strips of cloth that the text was projected onto, so that when Battler is overwhelmed by the red text the cloth wraps around and binds him. Still can’t tell if the incredibly loud clanking sound of the turntable in the center of the stage was added in with speakers, or if it was just a happy accident that the obnoxiously loud mechanical sound matched the story motif of pieces being moved around on a game board.
With the projection screen they even managed to do a great version of Rosa’s world’s greatest mom moment, so I’m absolutely invested in finding the rest of these somehow.
the Umineko plays are good fun. i’ve kinda been following along on twitter and my understanding is that theyre gonna release a soundtrack and recording initially and i assume after a while it might go up on youtube too- I think i saw some Chinese fans reupload it on bilibili too but god knows if that’s still up lol!
have you heard of the other stage play/manga that 07th expansion are making at the moment? About hot yaoi guys smoking cigarettes?
I have not! Are the hot yaoi guys stuck smoking cigarettes in a time loop, or are the cigarettes part of the death game?
I was just checking what else ryukishi has done between when they cry and Silent Hill and it seemed like all of them was either a time loop or a death game.
Natsuhi has been cosmically cursed to such a scale that it has escaped the catbox and affects the real world. The Umineko Stage director and screenwriter (not Ryukishi07) cheated on his wife (who plays Natsuhi in the play and is also a producer). This has caused a bit of a delay in the production, but they’re still going forward with it.
