Really wish I could see You Can See Everything but it’s probably never going to release in Japanese theaters so I’m going to have to wait for streaming I think.
This is the thread to discuss the movie “You can see everything" the insane movie about reality or theranos or what have you. I’m on a phone and can’t put down my major thoughts but when i get home I’m watching F for Fake
Just got out of You Can See Everything
No idea how to even begin talking about this movie but holy shit. See it asap, even if you aren’t a fielder head
I really really really need to see this
I just saw this too and I’m flipping OUT. Huge theater, totally packed. The feeling in the room was electric the entire time. After the movie ended, everyone was talking. I’ve seen packed movies in that theater many times, but I’ve never heard that amount and volume of post-film discussion after any other movie.
It’s incredible. The way Fielder gets himself into these incredibly complicated ethical dilemmas and throws them up on screen in all their gory details and ambiguities, to a mainstream audience. This is legitimately great experimental documentary filmmaking, and I think it’s going to make a huge splash. I felt like I was seeing a real cultural moment happening before my eyes. It’s not often a movie screening makes me feel this way.
Oh absolutely.
The first 16 showings at my local Indie theater are all sold out. Folks who have never heard of any of Nathan’s previous projects are all buzzing about this movie.
I also watched You Can See Everything. it’s a worthy successor to F for Fake
I thought we were talking about the Ricky Gervais skit with Professor Xavier
What are my thoughts on this film other than: Holy shit what is happening, for 3 hours.
I get the sense that this might have been a doomed project had Fielder not brought in Amanda Seyfried and added another layer of kayfabe to the production. Amanda is probably the best part of the show, being the audience surrogate for the last half, and adopting Holmes’ mannerisms and micro expressions that we’ve come to recognize. “whom is duping whom?” in this film’s central question and I don’t know yet if there is a right answer. It’s like Nathan has presented us with an all white rubix cube.
One thing I noticed is the film has 2 shots of vehicles that none of the subjects are in, and they are cybertrucks, the film makes a point to display them.
I think seeing it with an audience is important, even if that’s one other person, because their reactions ground you in reality. Moments where the air seemingly went out of the room, groans, gasps, they were an amplifier for my reactions. This made me feel something for seeing a film with a room full of strangers, like it’s a tangible added benefit.
I’m on youtube and reading the comments for The Dropout’s trailer and Collective Soul’s Shine so I can read people go “you saw that shit too, right?”
I’m very excited to see it, but I keep wondering as a kiarostami-head if I’ll really find is as wild as people say. But good thing if so many people are now getting exposed to what cinema is all about!
had this thought early on too… how much work lives in the shadow of close-up, etc… but it’s pretty wild. also maybe this thread title could use a spoiler warning or something lol
I’m not even sure how to even talk about it, but I wanna re-read my semiotics textbook from grad school, Ways of seeing, and Foucualt’s rambling essay on renaissance paintings.
So much of the film felt like a commentary, a mediation even, on perception.
I saw it with my friend who only had an abstract notion of who Nathan Fielder was. He kept saying “what tha fuuuuuck?” And cause he grew up in Texas, was giddy when the film moved there.
Julie and I just saw it, but the showing was so packed we had to be in the front row. The perspectival distortion to everyone’s face felt like perhaps the most authentic way to engage with this subject matter.
Need to see this
When Holmes gets out of prison Borat should come live with her next. Even wackier hijinx would ensue
Alternative: Kiarostami breaking the fourth-wall during Close-Up: Ummmm…so THAT just happened
We were also in the front row and I think it added to the experince
The only thing I know about this guy is that he made a bunch of people waste time and tonnes of money to take part in a fake talent show for his own shitty tv show so I’ll just yaar this if it’s worth watching
the rehearsal is like the opposite of shitty though
