we're in a guitar center hanging out now (formerly the electronic music tech appreciation thread)

oof i wish this shit was cheaper honestly, maybe i’m asking too much but like i want something the size of an Xbox controller that just has different kinds of buttons. maybe i just need to uh, make my own, which would mean learning how to…do…arduino stuff…or something…

like, i want the left side of the shitty keyboard i own, without the rest attached

seems weird that something like this doesn’t exist

maybe? not sure of your budget tho - I have the version of this that’s just encoders and it’s great for me because I’m mostly using them to control parameters on my 2 M8s

it’s pretty tiny which is nice

nevermind.

but on the other hand you’ve got like 50 buttons in front of you already that’s basically wealth, if you think about it, in this economy

I hope you can use the pitch shift to do sarcastic repetition VO in real time

incredibly those are all super generic despite their labels so i’ll probably map it to like, a bit crusher or something stupid

That’s a good deal!

hello again gear thread.
I have successfully resisted buying a new electric guitar for many months. i have sublimated the urge into learning some basic jazz guitar instead. (tho maybe, if I do get a 2nd guitar it’ll be a semi hollow or at least have a neck humbucker.)

2021 studio: acquired
:white_check_mark: 2x basic midi controller (real springy well used mpk mini for free, midi fighter for free - ty @spacetown )
:white_check_mark: DAW (Reaper, free…:face_with_raised_eyebrow:)
:white_check_mark: bass guitar (store brand childhood bass, free)
:white_check_mark: electric guitar (same old squier strat)
:white_check_mark: 2! acoustic guitars (both free, both too big for me, one vintage archtop, one store brand)
:white_check_mark: keyboard amp (Roland KC-250, free)
:white_check_mark: MPC-500 ($100 few years ago but should have been free for how limiting it is)
:white_check_mark: interface (Audiobox USB, free)
:white_check_mark: basic pedalboard (behringer + used fuzz face + used Wah, tuner, looper)

thinking of doing something fun with my polygon check. out of all the options I think some kind of keyboard thing makes sense, just want to figure out what. (show me your keyboard and tell me about the keybed and sounds)

2022 gear goals - options:
:thought_balloon: proper hardware keyboard / synth / workstation. really been lusting after something with a good Rhodes sound to learn nice big jazz chords on, for songwriting. thinking 61 key with a really good keybed. like a nord but like… under 1000. maybe like a juno-ds61 or yamaha mx61? idk I’m new here. hopefully could plug into my amp above.
:thought_balloon: alternative to above, midi controller with a great VST. again 61 key with aftertouch great keybed etc. does anything fit the category other than the komplete kontrol mk2 or s61 etc? I hear most of these controller keybeds are crap except for NI. for VST I hear rly good things about keyscape. def more affordable than a workstation with the downside of ‘stuck at the computer.’
:thought_balloon: I have a crappy arranger keyboard somewhere at my parents house, real dinky Casio model, always hated the feel and sound of it. idk it’s something
:thought_balloon: more fuzz pedals - got a whole list of em… love fuzz. or a univibe pedal or whammy
:thought_balloon: sampler, like an sp 404 type - do I need one? no. do I want to live out my j Dilla dreams? yes. that mpc studio (mpc as a controller type thing) looks interesting
:thought_balloon: electronic drum kit - I think this is a ‘nice to have’ not a need. it might teach me better drum feel, then again, few of the great hip hop producers needed real drum experience (I think). no interest in becoming good at playing drums
:thought_balloon: drum machine - again not needed I think I’d rather just get good with the daw. but idk anything about em

this is what had me thinking about keyscape

really love that like Stevie Wonder sound, big lush Rhodes jazz chords, just trying to find a good futureproof way to get started

I think someone else gave you those but I don’t remember who except that it wasn’t me

u right

I got an Arturia Keylab 88 Mk II, which isn’t to your specs or budget, but the included software instruments are everything I could ever want. Excellent Prophet, DX-7, Juno, piano, electric piano, organ, etc. sounds categorized for easy emulation of tones I have in mind. The Fatar hammer action key bed is effectively the nicest piano I’ve ever laid hands on. I’d get hands on it and a Keylab 61 for sure and see how the non-hammer keys feel in comparison.

Especially if you want one really nice Rhodes sound… information wants to be free. Test drive some VSTs.

The cheapest hammer controller is the M-Audio Hammer 88 which doesn’t have many other controls but, again, extremely nice tactility vs. a typical key bed.

I wanted a Squire Mus-Uar but I couldn’t find one so I got this b-stock Jag-Stang on sale

It’s certainly comfortable

I’m learning how to “properly set up” a dynamic vibrato tailpiece and I see why Cobain had his techs install Tune-O-Matics

The neck and weight distribution are worth it for me, though, it’s the Kinesis Advantage of guitars

Being out of tune is a feature

It’s free chorus effect

I’ve always wanted a guitar with a floating bridge so I can get those scary sounds from strumming behind it.

nice, driving my short-scale lust. as a 5’3 short torso person i’m forever searching for short person guitars. it’s so hard to play a strat sitting down, if i place it on my right thigh it’s literally in my armpit

playing classical position is slowly messing up my right shoulder (need to bring it forward to get around the top of the guitar)

the bullet mustang HH ($199) is great if you can flip your strat for one, it’s almost as nice as the duo sonic HS that’s ~4x more. might need to mask off the fretboard and dress the frets with an emory board but that’s easy
