Wee Tam and the 20 Big Huge Ones (Incredible String Band Williamson%)

Self described “genius of this parish” Robin Williamson first graced my ears off of a show called the Midnight Special which aired on WXRT in Chicago in the early 90’s. It still exists.

The track was The Minotaur Song (not one of my 20 big ones but notable) and to my 8yo brain it was bizarre and wacky but I was intrigued by the musicality. The singers voice was the standout with its ridiculous melismas kind of creepy nasal timbre. I very studiously counted the songs until the next break and memorized the name, The Incredible String Band.

I would not hear it again until my 20s. I did search during the early days of Napster but nothing ever came up. In 2005, I saw it on a shared server at the media job I had fallen ass backwards into. Multiple albums were there but I was only able to get a couple burned to a CD. While most of the songs were good, I was mainly drawn to the ones written by the same singer I had been enchanted by 16 years before, Robin Williamson. I was ravenous most of all for the oblique Renaissancey harmonies buried in his songs.

I would years later come upon a torrent of most of his work and dug in as deep as I have with any other artist over the course of several years, at time like an addict, for yet unheard to me treasures. There is a daunting amount I have dug through, a mountain of weird Celtic/Moroccan Indo-European psychedelia. Lots of traditional stuff too. I credit it with making my taste quite a bit more esoteric, weird, and poetic. I feel singular in my cohort as a fan of the work, and often wonder what good it has done me to get to know it. It might do me some good sharing it here.

Come along as we embrace sorrow, harp, and the lonely road.

1. The Mad Hatter’s Song

2. First Girl I Loved

3. My Name is Death

4. Koeeoaddi There

5. Witches Hat

6. The Water Song

7. Nightfall

That’s a good portion of Williamson’s songs off of the second and third ISB albums. They are dense works and many of the other writer’s songs are good too. The band got very busy (and eventually became Christian Scientists :grimacing: and gave up drugs) off the back of these recordings and this led to a lower density of my BIG ONES. There still are a lot of good ones including Mike Heron ones too. But this is Williamson%

8. Ducks on a Pond
I have been tortured by ear-worms of this song.

9. Mr. & Mrs.

10. Vashangro

11. Dear Old Battlefield
A rock song

12. Restless Night
There is only the full album so link is queued to the track

From here we go to solo Robin, sometimes with a band, but not the Incredible one. The first two overlapped ISBs primary active time. There is A LOT of really good stuff and it is difficult to try and give a cross-section of his post ISB output. This is what feels good to me right now of what’s available on youtube.

13. Strings in the Earth and Air

14. Cold Harbour

15. Port London Early

16. Five Denials on Merlin’s Grave
Long recording of a poem with music. It’s killer

17. Flower of the Briar

18. Fare Thee Well Sweet Mally

19. The Month of May

20. Praises Of A Mountain Hare
