I definitely get a bit of aberration, I’m not sure what the expectation is there; I had such a bad time back in the day trying to calculate my interpupillary distance to save money on direct-order glasses that when I encountered VR I was like “fuck it, defaults must be OK” which is very unlike me but I was just grateful it didn’t give me a headache or nausea since so much having to do with my vision in the past has done. used to have to wear contacts for it before I got laser eye too and overall I still happily put up with the experience
oculus is absolutely the worst ecosystem though and it’s a bummer that they’re the biggest subsidy at the moment, I think we were complaining up thread about how the smart VR buy basically changes year to year based on who’s trying to make money on it and facebook is in the catbird seat right now. VR hardware competition seems bizarre and defeating since anything that isn’t Sony or Facebook’s entry point is a huge pain in the ass to set up, whether through software shims or hardware base stations.
It’s really a shame how uninterested Valve is in trying to figure out how to cut corners (you know, actual product design) since they’re still inflating VR but all the hardware partners have fallen off or started designing solely for business training.
I guess the question is, in 2021, do you think the 3-year-old laptop manufacturer goggles are still a good buy? Because that’s really the only PC option besides the Quest below Index prices, right?
afaik they’re very cheap if you can find a good condition eBay listing and the software set up is a bit of a nuisance but mine don’t really feel outdated or non-performant in the least. they were and are much, much better than PSVR, which is my main point of comparison.
nothing has gotten better enough to replace them imo
Screens are ok? I wasn’t expecting it, but going from Vive to Index made VR much more comfortable because and I think it reflects a minimum resolution to make the world feel stable.
no complaint about the screens whatsoever. I only ever used your Vive and they were better than that (1440x1440 per eye); PSVR feels low-res and low-ergonomics, these don’t at all.
increasingly coming to the conclusion that I cannot get a good fit with Facebook’s seemingly egregiously cost-reduced strap, I can’t really do more than about twenty minutes at a time in this thing
so I may be looking at an aftermarket halo strap thing for it
beat saber is just about the most reasonable to play thing so far, though I did enjoy getting in the training mode of some dour multiplayer shooter and just spending time ejecting mags from guns and piling them up in a corner until the frame rate tanked
The reverb has a proprietary cable that will break if you remove it too many times, and they do not actually replace broken ones, or even sell one to you. So it’s not a great option in my book?
Hmm I am skeptical of judging the prevalence of hardware issues online but I know the Index had similar problems until Valve got the production in shape to sell/provide replacements.
yeah I mean I’m being slightly ridiculous complaining about this thing I got for free but I still felt reluctant spending the ~$60 to fix Facebook’s mistakes lol, I’ll see how it goes
