VR SUCKS... or does it???

I plugged in my PSVR yesterday for the first time in over a year with the intent to try that From game but instead I decided to start with Gran Turismo. Made it one lap in before I felt way too dizzy to continue. It’s very cool though.

surprised i’ve yet to see the idea floating around that the Oculus Quest has external cameras so Facebook can map which brands of mayonnaise you buy and how big your spare room is or whatever stupid data they want from your house

Joke’s on you, Facebook, you only get to see my basement and my collection of way too many monitors

it definitely does and they definitely do

I’m not a paranoic about mobile phones always listening for ad tech because it doesn’t make sense to Apple’s interests and people would know if Google were doing it and generally that data is not necessarily on top of existing fingerprinting for personalized ads anyway, but any device that Facebook has hardware-level access to, forget about it

Microsoft was a little bit more patient with Xbox before they tried to swallow it.

I think tech companies underestimate how fragile entertainment brands are when they have competition; entertainment products don’t have the specific differentiation on addressable market and imported social graphs that give tech companies irresistible momentum.

what

Oh no I didn’t see anything about a final discontinue date for Oculus accounts, that’s truly awful

The developer email they sent out earlier was much more benign

maybe I should have read more into “no action at this time

The developer blog also makes it sound like there’s additional options, with the test user accounts, plus to be honest I cant imagine most people even use the native social functions in the first place

this is just the start though isn’t it?

yep, I’d be interested in seeing the statistics for how many headsets are tied to Facebook vs Oculus accounts at the moment
While some people probably signed up with Facebook accounts initially to avoid making a new account, I have to imagine that most folks willing to spend the money on a headset and rig powerful enough to run it wouldnt have been using their Facebook account on it.
It seems like theyre leaning into the quest side of things anyway, this is just another way for facebook to further lock down the platform and integrate it with their existing infrastructure

can’t wait to rely entirely on homebrew to play any VR games in 4 years

gonna be making a fake facebook account for it

They’re going to read the address off a piece of mail in the trash and set up a shadow profile for you

i would really like to not have to tie my personal facebook account to my fucking work just to test on the headset

i hate how working for facebook is like, 90% of the time facebook pitching its own employees on shit that mostly sucks

if you’re buying something brand new at this point, I think the vive cosmos is probably the best-supported & most comfortable option?

it’s like, twice as expensive as the lenovo explorer I got 3 years ago though and I honestly don’t know what the benefits are

they’re on eBay again so maybe worth a look idk
