Oh, weird. Iron Man VR is actually good? It’s by Camouflaj, who I don’t think have released anything since Republique but apparently did make a Republique VR, so they have some VR experience already. And it appears to be published by Sony so I don’t know that there’s an announced PC version at the moment. Just PSVR for now.

It does do the thing where you control Iron man’s left and right hands to aim his palm thrusters for flight and palm blaster for aiming so it needs PS Move controllers. It’s takes some learning as you’d expect it since you have to get a feel for how the game handles turning, inertia, and momentum, but as you get your grips on it the flying is actually pretty fun. The demo that just came out has a tutorial level where you free roam around rock pillars on a coast side that ends with a time trial course through the area. The game has a good sense of space and speed so it feels good to fly past arches and though caves.

It also has the first level of the game which is not quite the same kind of thing. Rather than the free roaming open area of the tutorial it’s a much more directed experience where you’re jumping out of a jet, fighting flying ships attacking the jet, and repairing the jet along the way. It mostly takes place among an endless sea of clouds so it doesn’t have the same feeling of existing in a place that the tutorial level has. Due to the tendency of enemies to flying into your field of view before shooting you and there being no sense of a top or bottom level in the sky, it ends up feeling more like a shooting gallery type of game despite you technically having free movement. It doesn’t really make you move a lot, but it is the first level after all. The game could be paced to ease you into more complicated spaces, or it just wants to start with some simple spectale.

There are, hm, “VR experience” type things through out, more directed and controlled moments where you can’t do anything but the one thing the game wants you to do. Stuff like grabbing and moving metal pieces on plane wreckage, flying in place and shooting freezing goo at fires, or moments where you’re supposed to be flying forward but the game is clearly controlling your speed so that you don’t reach your destination too quickly while you shoot debris in your path. But it is just the first level so I don’t know how much of the games leans towards one style over the other.

But flying beside, above, and under that plane feels phenomenal. You can really get a sense for just how big it is and it feels great to even land on top of the plane and just gawk at being in such a place.

I hope there are more Prop Cycle style levels like the tutorial area. I think I could really enjoy a game like there where you are given a large area to explore and solve mini-puzzles and encounters like an action-platformer.

But Iron Man VR is definitely something I’m going to keep an eye out for now.

Yeah, I recalled there were positive impressions of it from the press when it was first announced but I was always like “But, it’s a Marvel tie in game isn’t it? Is it really actually good?” And it seems like no one was wrong.

Unlike Gungrave VR, which had some positive impressions from trade shows but sucks real bad. It’s like being inside a mobile game. It’s that quality of game design and scope.

Oh, looking at a video it looks like there is a little bit more to do in the demo; I missed some challenge levels that were listed in the menu because you have to look farther right to see them than I apparently did. But here’s a video of the demo if anyone wanted to see it.

there should be a VR recreation of the epsiode of Are You Afraid of the Dark where the kid gets stuck in a shopping mall after playing an evil pinball machine and then he has to fight bad guys from the pinball machine drawings off with a gold? Super Soaker and then at the end he is going up the escalator to escape and then a giant pinball looms at the top oh no he will never escape smash cut to credits

I also remember the episode with the ghost of a kid who froze to death in a shed, the old sea captain being haunted by the ghosts of a shipwreck he looted (the ghosts come ashore when he sleeps so he can only sleep for 15 minutes at a time before they reach his house and presumably murder him) and

I’m starting to seriously consider getting a PSVR cuz I want to simulate being out of the house during quarantine and it seems to be the only decent VR setup under $600 that is actually in stock anywhere right now. Unfortunately, it looks like the only way I can get it with the associated Move controllers is to order a bundle with Blood and Truth and Everybody’s Golf VR in it, two games I couldn’t care less about.

Has anyone played Blood and Truth? Is it any good at all?

Also: I mainly want a way to play Superhot VR because I’m still reeling from the time I tried it on a Vive in Bumpass. Will PSVR be able to do the game justice?

My nephews have Blood and Truth. I’ve not played it but they liked it. I could borrow it I guess and check it out. But it looks really polished and slick and everyone seems to agree it’s like one of the top 5 PSVR games to play.

Yeah it’s fine sweet wine on PSVR.

PSVR doesn’t seem to good for “simulating being out of the house” though. resolution is low for video stuff in my experience.

Everybody’s Golf vanilla is awesome though. I just found the VR game on deep discount at a local large grocery store, lucky me.

It will not fool you into thinking you are actually outside but walking around Skyrim VR is far more visually interesting than walking around my neighbourhood for the 57th time this month

iron man vr feels good as heck, but i wish it was some unlicensed game instead.

my psvr headset was very dusty.

As I contemplate whether to buy a PSVR, I’m also thinking about how I’d miss out on fucking around with weird experimental shit that’s only on PC. But I just remembered that Dreams is going to have a VR expansion, so maybe that kind of space will be available on the PSVR too at that point, if the software is flexible enough.

Astro Bot does a pretty good job of making it feel as if you are actually in its environments.

I am looking forward to trying Last Labyrinth and Paper Beast when I get my PSVR back from the coworker who is borrowing it. And, of course, Disaster Report 4. But I imagine that’s one I won’t want to play in VR the whole time.

like others I tend to get through VR stuff in batches due to the overhead of getting it all out

If it’s like the demo, it’s not the regular games. It’s a separate VR experience, and I don’t know of what length or scope. It didn’t look like it’d be much, but it was also a demo so I can’t say for sure.

Yeah, this has actually been my most wanted VR thing since all this stuff started. Google Maps was my favorite thing to use the Google Daydream VR headset on.

So I finally bit the bullet and got a PSVR. It’s pretty cool!

I had a tough time getting it to fit well with my glasses. The lenses of my glasses were straight-up touching the lenses of the headset, which makes me totally afraid of scratches. I’m sure that’s not how it’s supposed to be, but if I pull the headset visor out enough to avoid it then I can see a disconcerting amount of the floor below me within my field of vision. I ended up putting on my last pair of contact lenses I’d been saving, and now it’s a lot easier to wear this thing. I’m going to have to go get a new prescription once it’s safe to go to the optometrist.

My gf Esme and I played a bunch of things. We got the Everybody’s Golf / Blood and Truth bundle but haven’t even installed either yet.

First we tried a bunch of demos. Astrobot really is as great as everyone’s said. It’s easily the most impressive and fun game I’ve tried in VR so far. I watched Esme play the first level and I thought it looked like a decent platformer, not bad but not extraordinary. Then she handed me the headset and I tried level 2. It turns out, watching someone else play the game is completely different from the experience of actually playing it. Feeling situated within a level that is much taller and wider than you, looking around walls, looking up and down for secrets in obscure corners, all while guiding your tiny little guy around… it’s great. People who compared this to playing Mario 64 for the first time were on point, it really does feel that way. Esme and I were both flipping out. I’m definitely going to buy this game ASAP.

The Moss demo was trying to do something similar, but it didn’t feel nearly as vital. The tone of the demo was very quiet and dull, and it felt like just looking down at a little diorama, without any particularly interesting use of VR. It was just like playing an unremarkable mid-budget PS2 platformer, basically.

The Iron Man demo was much more interesting, even though I fucking hate Marvel. Having to listen to all this dumb comic book banter and sit through cut scenes was a real drag, but I have to admit that the flight/shooting controls are pretty cool. Probably not cool enough for me to get the game though.

Superhot is obviously amazing, but unfortunately it felt really janky on PSVR compared to the Vive setup at Bumpass. Whenever I reached for anything further than a foot or so away from my body, the game totally lost track of my hands. This isn’t good, cuz many of the levels are designed around you having that kind of reach! I think I may have miscalibrated my camera though, so that might account for the issues. I think I’ve got it working properly now and I plan to give it another try soon. In any case, regardless of the jank, Esme was instantly addicted, and played until she started feeling motion sick.

I haven’t tried it yet, but Esme is currently giving No Man’s Sky a go in VR. Neither of us has played this game at all before. We were both pretty taken aback by how many systems, menus, and weird controls the tutorial immediately throws at you. She was pretty overwhelmed at first, but after about 15-20 min of fumbling around she’s gotten used to it and she says the UI is decent. Reaching behind your back to pull out your tools is very cool. She’s having a grand old time teleporting around this planet and scanning things. The game throws a lot of text at you and it’s kind of a pain to read through it all on this low-res headset, but doable.

It’s interesting to see such a complex, fully-featured game converted to a VR interface. It seems like they did a pretty decent job!
