I brought this without other games when I was looking after my grandpa overnight in the hospital. I got so mad and frustrated at the surprise AR beginning. Playing that in a high risk care ward hospital at 11pm. It is a scar on my character that I didn’t quit immediatlely.
I got about 3 hours into the game before I sold it.
fucking hate dunkey, fucking hate forgetting some shitty gamer personality only for them to come back into my field of view for the dumbest stupidest shit.
idk, people’s reaction to him starting a publishing company where they say he has no experience and shouldn’t do it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. a lot of it seems like tone policing, people don’t like his arrogance or the way he says some games are bad. but people are making these judgment calls all the time in their head, even if they’re not speaking on them. for me, someone with strong opinions on games and a lot of money seems to be as fine a person to offer publishing support as anybody.
Dunkey and a bunch of other youtubers started the whole “Unity is a bad engine” meme, among other things. There is this entire inverted dynamic where gamer youtubers somehow command more respect than the actual developers and this feels like an outcropping of that. He’s a games “outsider” and therefore “objective” or whatever the fuck that means. If he knew how hard it was to actually make something maybe he’d shut the fuck up, I know I stopped making those same judgement calls in my head after actually doing game development. Or maybe it was just the tone of the announcement video “I play a lot of games, therefore, I know best” no, you don’t know shit.
Maybe that’ll actually happen, they’ll publish a game and discover how difficult it actually is and he’ll have a big mia-culpa moment. GMTK managed to amass a huge audience on youtube and one of the most popular game jams before they started making a game for themselves and then were like “shit, all of my old videos are wrong”, which I actually respect.
I’m sure Dunkey has said some stupid stuff, but he seems to mostly talk about design and the experience of playing games. I honestly don’t think you need to be a game developer to be able to have insight about those things. Telling a critic “well, why don’t you make something better!” has never seemed like a sound way to respond to things. That is, assuming the critic is not making claims about the developer or their production conditions, which I’m sure hasn’t always been true of Dunkey.
dunkey is funny.
dunkey publishing games is stupid, but no worse than anyone else doing that work. how he frames it in his video is a huge eyeroll, but it’s self promo, whatever.
dunkey is the maximally stupidest youtuber i can tolerate (compared to say, scott the woz, who being just a couple bits stupider i can only hatewatch at this point)
i don’t particularly mind him, but there are plenty of understandable reasons to dislike him as hellojed outlined (there are also plenty of dumb reasons, as with anything)
(my favorite stupid reason for people disliking dunkey is when certain people accuse him of being racist for showing contempt for the modern JRPG — like, I dunno, I feel like there are easier ways one could argue that point)
my biggest issue with him is that, relative to his immense popularity, i feel like a large portion of his fans don’t quite understand what level of irony he operates on, which creates some obnoxious spillover effects (which I understand not everyone has the privilege of being able to ignore)
anyhow, i think it would be really funny if this publishing venture of his blew up in his face, but i probably shouldn’t actively wish for it to happen
i’ve seen this levelled against a few developers and feel like it started as an offshoot of the “western novelty dating sim by people who’ve never played a dating sim” critique… which is funny bc i think that one had a point, whereas “insufficiently reverent of old squenix titles” is not a criticism i would make about contemporary videogames people per se
He is simply obnoxious and arrogant. That’s it! I used to watch him for a while but he said so many stupid things and his formula got old so I stopped.
This isn’t really a him problem though, practically every gaming youtuber thinks they have good game opinions and think they are capable of articulating them well, but almost none of them have put in the knowledge work necessary to build a comprehensive view of the medium or describe the psychology of design choice. They are, at best, ~reactionary~. They are like the top player of a competitive videogame who has many suggestions, all of them bad. They are “correct” by virtue of their social standing, not anything descriptive or persuasive.
After many negative experiences with those sort of people hating great games for stupid reasons (my personal favorite being “the graphics aren’t high fidelity enough!”) and promoting slop detritus, I have an exclusively bad view of them now. People can and should demand better from people making game videos. Both in terms of humor, and in terms of granular analysis.
That said Cameron K does no jokes and much more granular analysis and is somehow both wronger and more annoying than Dunkey so. Maybe we’re just fucked. Mass media is incapable of having good opinions on things.
Is there a good comedic video game steamer/you tuber or is it just a tainted genre
Trying to under stand if this forums own sliver of the dunkey controversy is specifically motivated against him or if he is just a prominent emblem of a generally reviled phenom
NB im coming from a place of basically complete ignorance, not meant to be like a leading question or anything

Twitch streamers are on average more acceptable than Youtubers. Youtube’s algorithms reward engagement and that drives them to be over-the-top. The incentives on Twitch are more to stream on a consistent schedule in a low-key-likeable way so that viewers get into the habit of tuning in every day
Yes my strategy to find someone watchable is find them on Twitch, and then hope they have a decent editor on YouTube so you can watch the more concise version there.
