old consoles as a kind of lingua franca. like, if you make a game for game boy/famicom/mega drive, and sell the rom on your itchio page, you’re selling a game people can play on those systems, but also on the original host hardware, as well as pretty much any other console or handheld from the past 20 years (though some of those might need hacking to do it, i think most people buying roms from itchio probably have some hacked hardware lying around)

I think I’ve seen it in a few Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest remaster bonus dungeons but there it felt much more like padding with reused assets than something interesting
