videogame things you think about a lot (Part 1)

The fact that there were multiple mods for Oblivion that took out the “prisoner” origin because people couldn’t imagine being both a hero AND a criminal, or that criminal != immoral or unethical

The thing in Prey where the choice was “execute a guy for extra resources or don’t” and the moral dilemma was his prison record of

Human trafficking
Kidnapping
Solicitation of a minor
Distribution of controlled substances
Fraudulent impersonation

and three out of five are admittedly, pretty bad! Should I vaporize him to get some extra bullets? And I was treated like some sort of hero for Not Pushing The Button To Actively Vaporize A Dude That It Says Here On This Piece Of Paper (That Also Designates Him As a Volunteer For The Vaporizing Machine) He Might Have Done A Heinous Crime.

This is even dumber in an Elder Scrolls game where being an unethical immoral criminal is an absolutely acceptable character choice and in fact reactionary nerds would scream bloody murder if the possibility of those actions were removed

This old clip from Oblivion where a guy shoots an arrow straight into the sky and maybe 15 seconds later it comes down and lands right on some dude’s head and kills him. Then this lizard lady starts running around yelling “By the Gods, there’s a psychopath on the loose!”, but she barely gets to the end of the sentence before the player runs up and lets out a huge grunt while swinging a two handed sword and killing her instantly.

No, people definitely buy that stuff. Those are Steam Market prices, not official-from-valve price determinations. It’s just one of those weird situations/communities where people are willing to donk down tons of cash on little aesthetics and such. I don’t actually play CS:GO but from my understanding they have a similar market.

I think about this interview whenever I think about BurgerTime:

“It’s not a question of ‘should I do this’, it’s a question of ‘I have to do this’.”

for whatever reason at GDC 2008 they decided to make a bunch of male game developers get into a hotel bed with the penthouse pets and despite any video footage of this seemingly disappearing from the Internet, the imagery of Denis Dyack in his fucking dad jeans and wearing his fucking white New Balances on the bed is permanently seared into my brain

what if you cant find pictures of cliffy b In Bed With The Pets because he took of his shoes AND socks to get on the bed and he was not anticipating the feet hunger of gamers in the late 2010s

cliffyb actually has the feet of a Gears of War character and it is too terrifying for human minds to comprehend
