videogame things you think about a lot (Part 1)

In Mario 64 it ought to be possible to jump backward fast and precisely to stomp on the Lakitu’s head. Then the screen would go black and perspective would switch to a backup Lakitu who comes out of Lakitu Central Heaven and flies back to Mario

Not intentionally, but you can do this in Styx:

No More Heroes 3 has a boss fight (minor spoilers) that takes place during a live concert – whenever you’re filmed by a drone, it becomes impossible to read the patterns consistently, and you’re encouraged to jump towards the screen and slash it to destroy the machine. But barely anyone discovers it in their playthrough since we’re so used to cameras being this sacred thing

it was cool how beyond good and evil had a part where you had to deliberately enter and then find a hidden exit out of a racing minigame to advance the plot

the people on usenet in 94-96 insisting that the 3do m2 would outsell the playstation, n64 and saturn combined

and that i’ve procrastinated for several years on making a usenet thread

also 90s brit journalist slang like “coin-op conversion” and “beat-'em-up”

Weren’t these universal?

in the uk game parlance “beat em up” is a fighting game as opposed to a belt scroller although the existence of the internet has made the american one more common in general

back then, it just meant any game with punching and/or kicking people

some old people still use it like that and it’s so unclear and annoying

Apropos of nothing, I’m thinking about this quote regarding Miyamoto’s reaction to the violence in Goldeneye:

One point was that there was too much close-up killing – he found it a bit too horrible. I don’t think I did anything with that input. The second point was, he felt the game was too tragic, with all the killing. He suggested that it might be nice if, at the end of the game, you got to shake hands with all your enemies in the hospital.
