just realized you can see some contemporary DNA shared between chrono trigger and Mario RPG in the designers’ insistence on giving half the characters really splashy but mediocre final techs
Why are 2DSLL’s 200 bucks?

(still salty that i couldn’t get a foldable GBA SP(?) back then, yeah, it has been that long)
Castle Shikigami II: You Can (Not) Of has a famously “bad” english language dub as shown here
I always knew of this reputation but never looked into it because I never got very far but it’s actually because the PAL version had all the lines removed. This was a point of contention when it was rereleased on Steam that I believe has a different translation but merely typing this is as far down this shikigami rabbit hole I’m willing to go (As a teen I bought a copy of the Wii port of III only to learn it was an import that didn’t work on my EU Wii and it would never be released here.
But what bothers me going back to the PAL version and comparing the first stage…
Is that the stage theme is COMPLETELY different! Like, not even we moved some tracks around but I’ve not been able to find a clean rip of this song anywhere online. I asked a CastleGami fan if they knew anything about it and they said no and made a Shmupsforum thread about it but but AFAIK this is the only discussion on this track and where it came from.
I honestly forgot scrap brain zone act 3 even existed, I don’t think I’ve played through sonic 1 in like 30 years
seems like a very unpleasant last level
The things I learned to do as a kid with a PC in the house to get things to run well…
That Virtua Fighter is the only fighting game I’ve played online in which I would regularly get abusive messages sent to me after a game
In the Mad Gear stage on Street Fighter Alpha 2, if you stay on the left side of the stage as any of the women fighters, Cody will stare at you and Jessica doesn’t appreciate it.

It’s a good level. Sonic 1 level design is substantially about “how do we make interesting challenges with Sonic’s gradual acceleration curve” and it’s the ultimate version of that. And it’s from an era when videogames weren’t necessarily expected to be beaten.
The main problem I had with it is it doesn’t have any Scrap Brain-ness to it at all. It’s 100% Labyrinth Zone Act 4 in appearance and mechanics. So Sonic 1 maintains a logical difficulty progression at the cost of a lot of cognitive dissonance in the spatial/narrative progression.
Scrap Brain is built on top of Labyrinth or something

That the physical edition of Radiant Silvergun port that Live Wire did from Limited Run is at version 1.0.6 which includes an arrange soundtrack that was advertised as ‘physical only’ except that the digital version has only been updated to 1.0.5 so after you put the cart in and play it, if you then take it out for whatever reason and try to play the digital version the switch will try looking online for the more recent update that doesn’t exist and you’ll never be able to play Radiant Silvergun on that switch ever again.
The ZZT equivalent of John Romero making Sigil would be if Allen Pilgrim came back and made a follow up to Fantasy or Monster Zoo.
