The cutting-edge JPEG XL format is designed to support exactly this sort of thing: in particular both JPG or PNG can be converted to JPEG XL without degrading their appearance at all.
Second Life as usual was decades ahead of its time

And thatâs why everyone is rushing to adop- oh just kidding, canât adopt a format that competes with ours
Ah.
I was starting to get the impression that a new image format was finally getting traction, but I guess our posthuman overlords will be transferring JPEGs via neural link in the year 2749
missing destiny 1 lately and inevitably started thinking about the ephemerality of all these closed multiplayer and live service games
(dtr when they announce theyâre turning the servers off)
I even regretted playing a bunch of the Destiny 2 expansions âtoo lateâ when they all made them free like 2 years ago. As part of that big freeification, they half-assed rebalanced all of it with some crude scaling factors so it was still playable regardless of if you had starting equipment or super exotics.
In practice, that meant all of it, climactic boss fights and all, was flattened into a low-friction difficulty plateau, and equipment drops literally changed nothing. It felt like a shambling zombie version of levels that were surely once fun
nah thatâs just d2

Big flashbacks to 2006 me writing a thesis that never got done but started with trying to discuss realism in Silent Hill 2. Systemic indeed.
The only ghost Pokemon in Gen 1 were also part poison which gave the type a liminality and mystery that was ruined in the following gen by this critter
The mind control psy emitter item in Syndicate. It started almost useless, but the more people you already had mind controlled, the more powerful the item got.
I used to mind control every single civilian on the map and have them mill around me in a giant crowd that made the game super laggy. Then I would stand at a corner and aggro enemies, and before they turned the corner they were already mind controlled too. When there was no corner available, the crowd would be a useful meat shield instead
it owned that ghost and dragon type were both limited to a single evolutionary line each in gen 1
Itâs amusing the devs were aware enough of this that the âfinalâ stage has no basic civilians, making it impossible to build the mindshare necessary to persuade enemies.
In Syndicate Wars they instead make it so the church is immune to syndicate persuasion until you can get a better persuadertron late in the campaign, which is less funky.
back in the 90s i had a little website
i wrote a strategy guide covering every single level in syndicate and had that on the site
wish i could recover that, i was really obsessed with that game for awhile
Is this for sure not on archive.org (youâve probably looked, but Iâve been surprised (and a bit embarrassed) by what Iâve been able to dig up from my 90s internet life with some deep searching there)?
i am highly doubtful it is archived in any way whatseoever, but to be perfectly frank i donât even know what to look for lol
Its a bit weird that Capcom followed RE8 and the PS5 upgrade of the second one (RE 2 2 2) with RE4 2
