Sunset I haven’t played but the Path legitimately sucks.
Ever since playing Death Stranding I am always extremely aware of my footsteps. It’s like an almost permanent Tetris effect I am always thinking about the ground under my feet and how it feels when I’m outside.
Recently decided to play Tactics Ogre again.
I’ve been playing Tactics Ogre for idk 25 years now? Played through chapter one multiple dozens of times?
Every time I get to the end of chapter one there’s a Law route “choice” that is just absurd. The local Duke asks you to No Russian a bunch of your side’s own peasants bc their death and subsequent galvanization of your cause is worth more than keeping them alive. Because they’re poor . And every time I get there I cannot absolutely cannot do it. Like what the fuck.
And inevitably I’ll pop into a game faqs or Reddit board and someone is like “oh yeah so I just finished a Law route. And I just am like. How can you do your little digital buddies like that? What?

Monster Party, despite being very “Famicom game that was brought over after heavy editing” coded, never actually released in Japan.
(A Japanese prototype was found, but it never hit store shelves)
I want Elden Ring Golf where they take the whole world and turn it into golf courses.
Did you play Dark Cloud 2?
For like 10 minutes. Huh yeah so like spheda except more like actual good golf courses and mechanics. ^ _^

This Sim City 3000 ad in the January 1999 issue of Computer Gaming World
The Saturn was Sega’s all-time biggest selling console in Japan, and the only time they outsold Nintendo there in a console generation. Was it just weird enough?
their arcade games were still massively popular and then they released sakura wars, which also ended up being massively popular
plus there was a lot of support from capcom and snk
IIRC it kinda filled the void left by NEC’s PC-FX bombing too.
A lot of VNs and STGs that would have been the domain of the PC Engine previously? That was always my guess. Plus it was lousy with tactics games and fighting games.
The n64 had exactly one ogre battle game, two RPGs, no or almost no VNs, zero cd enhancements, one star soldier game, and all the arcade games were ones that I don’t think did well in Japan. FPS games have never that done well over there especially in the 90s so that wasn’t a draw like it was here.
My guess is the Saturn just had more stuff that was popular in Japan at the time.
!!!
The Saturn being the successor to the PC-Engine is an idea that makes so much sense in retrospect.
Dreamcast had most of that stuff but it kinda flopped in Japan*. Heck I even imported that giant Sakura Wars box set.
*Hm okay well Dreamcast sold less than half of what Saturn did in Japan. I suppose officially it was around for like a year less.
This seems pretty well reasoned.
Hm yeah and Nintendo wouldn’t take too much stuff aimed at older demographics, I suppose, and Sony was possibly less interested in 2D stuff? (Although they put out a fair amount of 2D stuff in Japan so maybe that isn’t super-applicable to this; I suppose the no-2D thing was more Sony’s American arm, according to vaguely remembered legend.)
(Then again didn’t you have to do sprites as textures on polygons or something for PS1? Anyway I wonder if straight 2D was maybe slightly easier for developers on Saturn. Less hardware limited at any rate, probably.)
(Oh yeah like Capcom’s series of Vampire ports was on PS1 and Saturn but the PS1 series ran way late because of porting difficulties. And on Saturn a developer could even throw stuff on a RAM cart instead of having to nerf it down to fit on the stock console hardware.)
(And I suppose by the next gen Sony’s PS2 could do 2D just fine–if maybe not quite as sharp as DC, but often with better loading times–so Sega no longer had the clear advantage there.)
