Really hate the corpse run mechanic of soulsish games. Like if you go somewhere out of your depth, and you’re like “oops, maybe I should go exploring somewhere else,” but the game says fuck you for even considering that, what you’re going to do is throw yourself at that same brick wall until you turn off the game.

Probably…over 20 years ago now, my sense of time is all fucked, they opened a “Ghattiland” pizzeria/arcade thing in my town, and advertised it a lot on TV as specifically having, and I quote, “no 'people-killing-people” games."

But they had that 90s Star Wars arcade game and one of those huge rotating Beachhead cabinets…

This kind of knee jerk reaction to game design is what built YouTube

I credit the demons souls corpse run for finally breaking my habit of needing to do perfect runs of games. I couldn’t stand to play FPS games or platformers without invincibility/rewind, because I couldn’t bring myself to lose a replenishable but finite resource (health/lives). Losing a big bloodstain of souls was like getting a bee sting for the first time.

It teaches you apathy which is key to enjoying almost anything. Praise Miyazaki

did you know if you died in ultima online you became an invisible ghost at the spot your body was, your text would be translated as OoOooOoooO that someone had to have the spirit speak skill to understand, the game world was now black and white, you had to run (run, not float, because ghosts were just invisible people with a sheet over them) all the way to either a wandering healer or a hospital, be resurrected there in the hospital, have to run all the way back to get your stuff because every item you were carrying or wearing is back on your body, unless you were killed by players in which case it’s almost definitely not there anymore, so you had to keep a bunch of bags in your bank vault with identical bat suit setups of your gear so you could maybe recover your old gear

Yes, I’m nostalgic for that exact situation.

I’ve always regretted missing out on early UO even though I’m pretty sure it would have made my life even worse

This part of it was good and the rest of it was bad

My coworkers at a catering job got me into Ultima Online, and the timing was perfect because our work hours were erratic and I had basically no other responsibilities at the time.

The game was great but after a few months I realized how much time I was spending with it and quit, more or less resolving never to play a MMO game again.

I might consider playing one again if and when I get old, if there’s a good one and I don’t have much else going on at that point, but it would have to be a game with actual risk and consequences like early Ultima Online.

How many modern games feel like you’re venturing out into a truly dangerous and unpredictable world? None of them. (Demon’s Souls kind of does until you memorize it, and games like Starbound and Core Keeper at least come close.)

I promise this will not be a post convincing you to like this mechanic (from dark souls no less) so much as one where you made me think about why i like it lol

see i agree thats the psychology its preying on but in the Souls games at least (where i can trust FS’s level design) i love it, it feels like gambling against myself. in like a game of HORSE lol. Can i consistently beat my own high score or should i cut my losses? should i save up to buy a big-ticket item early and risk losing it or play it safe and spend it while ive got it? and then u get the soul items to bank & use whenever so saving up happens anyway as you explore

In other games ive played it has not worked because like the economy is less well balanced, the level design doesn’t support it, the resource is scarce so its way too harsh, usually some combo of those. i think the only non Souls game ive liked it in is Shovel Knight lol
