I thought early 3d was ugly even in it’s time and it was such a sadness to be moving away from 2d. now it’s legal to make 2d games again and some people are even figuring out it’s look best with crt effects, and 3d is boringly photo real and I think ps1/saturn 3d is maybe the ideal level of graphical abstraction for 3d but that’s also a trend now so maybe there’s hope for humanity yet

when they came out, i had no way of seeing virtua racing and fighter except for magazine screenshots, so i thought they looked like shit and didn’t understand the fuss

outruns visual style has greater resonance because its a little more human. virtua racing is the syd mead fantasy of being the greatest shiny line out of the factory and outrun is about trying as hard as possible to look cool in front of a girl . both have their strengths do not get me wrong.

i must clarify for my own peace of mind that i’m not actually certain which one i prefer. on most days i’d immediately say outrun and be done with it but i’m less sure now
in 2025, i think i’d rather play virtua racing most days because it’s more of a racing game and less of a driving game, and i tend to prefer the former
but outrun is iconic and legendary in a profound, foundational way that can’t be overstated. it’s wild how few decent driving games there were before hang on and outrun, and imo as great as hang on is outrun absolutely blows it away in many regards. pole position is great, don’t get me wrong…

it bothered me that the postgame allows you to just run around the world and avert every single tragedy that ever happened through time travel. what if we could just undo loss? i’m not even sure why this bothers me so much, it just literally feels insulting and like the audience is just not expected to be able to bear even fictional tragedy. i love dq11 but i always feel uncomfortable about this.

Came in here to talk about how I’ve only just personally discovered the existence of the Fight Club ps2 game featuring a playable Fred Durst, but now you’ve all got me thinking about Outrun…
This is a really good idea, especially if it’s based on 2 and you get to shout stuff like “DODGE THE UFOS”. Someone needs to make a mod…
One of very few games from that time period that actually leans into its quasi-realistic 3D visuals to great effect! I love all the different course transitions where the colour of the sky suddenly changes, a flock of birds whizz by way too quickly on cue like stage props, mountains and terrain form up out of nowhere all around you…
Also something really absurd and hilarious about how you drift in that game. Your car will just be sliding sideways for 5 whole minutes completely unimpeded by the laws of physics… I love it. Just unfiltered VIDEOGAME in all its glory and stupidity…
