They’re still making new PS4 games. In 2025. Brand new AAA titles are releasing for the PS4 still.

There is a historical reason.

Back in the early 00s the term first showed up on BGG forums. The people using the term were specifically applying it to games like Cosmic Encounter, WH40K and (I think) Arkham Horror (among others). The term was used to indicate designer (not mass market) games that were thematic, violent and full of randomness. It was used as a term of endearment, as Ameritrash fans were not ashamed to say that they absolutely loved their Ameritrash games and preferred them over eurogames.

But that’s not all.

One year before the term first showed up on the BGG forums, it showed up on another general (non-board game related) forum. On that forum, the term was used to describe mass-market games like Monopoly.

As far as anyone knows, the two groups invented the name Ameritrash independently and in parallel, and neither group was aware of the definition give to the term by the other group.

America has a very distinct niche I guess. boorish, tawdry, shallow, cheap thrills

The land of raccoons…

raccoons are one of the greatest things about america, and the way raccoons are in all likelihood easier to love from a distance is rather germane

I was thinking they could make this now as a 4 player online co-op game, but then realized that’s just Monster Hunter

reminds me that there are several small stall owned by hermit style olds selling Italian pulp fiction books and VHS tapes around the east side of Roma Termini. When they are surrounded by the historical architecture of Rome, presents a very strong visual feeling about niche market.

they all staring at me in tense what I was looking for while I walked around. I tried not to walk away with awkward and said I was looking for a monkey comic by Milo Manara (who is the only erotic comic artist from Italy I known). One of the owner said in Italian loudly to other olds, ‘**** ******** Milo ***** ****** The Ape!’ and he said to me ‘NO, RARE’.

as far as i can tell, this is the only thing the notes feature is for: the assumption that professional criminals are absurdly bad at keeping secrets when sending each other relatively small amounts of money

a friend who accused me of snobbery when i had no interest in lords of shadow (as a castlevania fan) when it came out.

but like, it had completely different character, story, aesthetics, game structure, game genre, and pretty much nothing tying it to castlevania beyond that word in its title, and the presence of a character named “belmont”.

and of course, 15 or so years later, lords of shadow is more forgotten than bomberman act zero, while there’s various rereleases of proper castlevania games. and even a semi-new game in the past year!

Listening to various VG podcasts, I’ve heard Lords of Shadow mentioned–and fondly–more than I’d have anticipated. There are plenty of reasons a game might not be remade; lack of a remake doesn’t necessarily indicate a lack of popularity.
