videogame things you think about a lot lot lot lot

Personally I found it disappointing how so many took their level design from Wolfenstein or Doom and the only one that tried to follow up on Duke 3D was Slayers X. Even Ion Fury felt more like Prime Target, and Dusk felt like a dare to make Redneck Rampage good.

Dusk’s level design gets awesome later, but it’s pretty annoying to have to get through near a whole episode of Just Ok first

The dungeon sprinter games never really pushed past just cloning doom, quake, etc except to fuse it with some abominable modern “gameplay loop” centric genre like roguelite so there’s a ton of untapped potential there if the taste for straightforward clones can be overcome.

At the least, clone Strife! I know there are retro imsim clones like peripeteia and monomyth but I want to see some iteration along the hybrid of a dungeon sprinter and proto-imsim

I was about to say where are the Strifelikes

Thinking about Snowboard Kids 2. Thinking about how only 5 courses actually had snow on them, and two of them were the trick course and mail delivery course. I wish the series had managed to successfully keep going and spawn at least a half dozen Penny Arcade strips where the punchline was them renaming the series to “Board Kids”.

FF7’s original localization is not that well thought of but “Omnislash” is one of the funniest names for a technique that I can imagine.

And I guess Vincent had “Gigadunk” and “Satan Slam.” whoever did the limit break names was cooking

master chief never talks during player controlled gameplay in bungie halos. he constantly talks during player controlled gameplay in 343 Industries halos. idk how they haven’t picked up on this in 13 years of owning this IP. someone should do the “wile e. coyote rules” but for 343 industries (sorry, “Halo Studios”) so they actually understand their own character.

I’m reminded of when leadership would go on remote “alignment” trips where they’d stay at a fancy hotel and try to figure out the “core pillars” of “halo”. The word “fantasy” gets thrown around a lot, like “what’s the core fantasy?” and it felt like a bunch of people trying to sound smart by deploying buzzwords. I feel like what Master Chief actually is according to Microsoft is hanging out on a confluence page somewhere.

it’s so stupid all they need is an original xbox and the original games and like 20 hours of gameplay and a brain. they can figure out what the “pillars” are themselves it’s called “art criticism”

thinking about the Dark Souls 2 NPC Ornifex, who is a crow-headed “harpy” whose model is taken right from a Dark Souls enemy that only appears in a magical painting realm. and how her voice actor perfectly nails a humanoid being that thinks like a human but talks with a crow’s syrinx

do you have, a WONdrous soul??
=caw= be safe!!
