Thank you, I actually did miss this and it’s definitely something I’m into.
Even though I have kind of an obsessive interest in it, I share your feeling that a lot of game music is just kind of a challenge to get into on its own merits and collections of it can feel really uneven. I do have a collection of soundtracks on my computer I think are really great though (although my tastes tend towards the pre-CD-quality-audio era). Actually though, despite that, I share your fondness for the Evergrace soundtrack (one of my all-time favs actually) so maybe you would like some of the same game music I do. I’ve thought for years about putting together a game music mixtape or w/e but I never have, so maybe I should put that on my agenda…I have more stuff to worry about right now than I can really handle effectively and feel kind of like a squirrel chasing shiny things all the time since I’m still off my meds, but maybe it wouldn’t even take that long, idk.
@MintyJuffowup did you miss this too
these have been like a decade+ project for me at this point. it started with a tumblr called Sounds From The Abyss and a lot of it was to like de-stigmatize music in games people called “weird” or dismissed and look at it as music worthy of scrutiny at outside the context of whatever game. like so you could hand it to a person who just wanted to experience interesting sounds and they could get an compelling and comprehensive experience without knowing anything of the games it was from. like i wanted people to know the breadth of stuff they could hear in games that was getting ignored as actual music. i also tried to really hard to credit each individual composer, the game, and the platform the game was on in these mixes.
the first one started out with me being more puritan to putting only kind of “retro” videogamey textures but eventually it got looser and just became a way to put a lot of interesting stuff together in one place. i also intentionally threw some famous “bad” tracks and a few things that broke the rules a little bit in there so i think the first one is kind of different in sensibility from especially the latter three because of that. but the idea remained the same. but yeah, i think i kinda hoped these and this idea in general would catch on more than it ever did (welcome to the fate of basically everything i’ve ever done that i’ve actually liked tbh). but as @daphaknee said, @dogs made a similar recent mix inspired by them.
Yes lol. Thank you for helping me hear the because I think they’re going to be wonderful.
imagine in your head what the boss theme for a pc engine shooting game themed after greek mythology might sound like. then press play
Wow this is way better than the stage one theme used on every PC Engine best of music video.
one of Allison’s skills is to start blasting this music (replacing the usual battle theme) which gives her stats a boost + it’s just rly cool to have on the fly anime turnabout BGM
@boojiboy7 What was that Hydlide track you played at the projector at SB Con one morning? I can’t find it and it absolutely ripped.
