VIDEOBALL

get in here folx

@seven

i will be home sometime in the next four hours i am 90% sure

and then i will do that if y’all are still around

time zones are a curse

I took these guys down yesterday, was stuck on them for a couple of nights. improving my level 2 accuracy was probably the most important factor in beating them. my basic strategy was: split field into upper and lower with level 2’s > tie them up on the 2 ball side > charge level 3 on the way back to the one ball side and go for the touchdown.

probably seems obvious, but yeah, improving my level 2 game was the crucial element. I wasn’t getting deep enough on the 2 ball side to really tie them up properly, so I’d get scored on too often when I tried to switch.

sorry i lied, i am too depressed to do anything right now

later, then

Videoball will chip away at your depression one triangle at a time.

If you wanna play sometime, hit me up.

Just waiting for this to work with my controllers…

(which is kinda weird, 'cause Unity works with the by default, but they’ve used some fancy controller plug-in which seems to be not doing much)

So how’s the community growth + general playability + creature comforts for the PC version, right now?

I want to get around to this, but I’ll have to–like–make an effort to remember to jumpstart my interest in downloading + playing. It will definitely spur me along if I know that I can get a match day or night without arranging it first. But if that’s not the case, I should know the Hard Truth.

Also, there’s a completely solo (no AI) mode where I can practice shots and stuff, right? I like to go into my first team match with some sense of control and confidence.

You won’t find a game without being in the Discord. We have a group of folks who play more or less every night or every other night. As far as I know, there’s no solo mode, but you can just play local 1v1, crank the score quota up, and put the other player in the corner. You should really be practicing in Arcade mode, which doubles as a very useful tutorial for the game. You’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly if you jump online with us, though, and we often let newcomers host because it makes things a little more fair and we also like to test people to see how good their host is.

All that being said, if you’re still playing from Asia, you’re not going to have a good time. There were at least 2 players from that region a few weeks back, but I haven’t heard from them in a good bit.

There’s not a ton of community growth; we mostly have the same people who were here at launch or thereabouts, minus a bunch of people who don’t seem to play anymore (but might occasionally come back for a match or two if I @ them on Discord).

Regardless, VIDEOBALL is easily game of the year. It’s really hard to communicate how good this game is. How every time you play you learn more, your tactics evolve, your understanding shifts. How cerebral and nuanced and visceral it can be. The marathon, 10+ minute games. The sub-minute 10-1 stomps. Glory and skill and chaos. It is perhaps the greatest tragedy that this game isn’t more popular and acclaimed.

Yeah, I’m still in Thailand (and probably will be for at least another year). I have an okay cable internet connection, which I could increase (and have been meaning to), and I could play through a VPN.

Buuuuuut, I’m not sure how the netcode works. Like, if they’re serving me data from the States (as opposed to a local server, via a CDN), it should probably take me about twice as long to receive it.

So…yeah: I might find this unplayable. Hrm. Well. I don’t mind giving Tim my money; I just hope I can actually play the game before and after I’m home for Christmas.

If that’s how this goes down, that will be a HUGE bummer. I’d honestly rather that the game were all hype and no steak than a genuine masterpiece that never gets a community going (leaving Tim to simply pick up the pieces and move on to The Next Thing).

I mean, it’s one thing if it’s a single-player platformer or whatever. That can always gain a sleeper cult following. But obviously a social game’s legacy is more a literal aspect of playability.

At the very least, the SB cult could keep the flame and give it a chance to become a cult hit.

I hope Tim an team are okay. I have no idea how this stuff works: if there’s a rule that you’re dead in the water after a certain point or not.
