really nice write ups of the games and characters and no commentary, best of all

This is the person who runs noclip.website which lets you explore the maps from 3D Nintendo games in your browser. They’re studying how 3D Nintendo games are put together and have a few really nice videos explaining how graphics and physics work in Super Mario Galaxy and Wind Waker.
Surprisingly well-researched and presented history of Falcom. It’s clear there was a lot of interesting archival content to include so even outside of the information it’s fun to see that stuff (Falcom merch throughout the years for example).
Different channel, very slick & thoughtful close reading of the visual presentation of Modern Warfare. In a similar sense, I really appreciate that there’s a good amount of focus on their own visual presentation

Cuz I must nitpick, I wish youtubers didn’t so often feel the need to adhere to sorta rote essay conclusions and stylistics.
The Falcom one clearly goes over some egregious labor issues but the author trying to summarize it in a ‘so…in the grand history of falcom’ way always feels clumsy. The Modern Warfare one presents a lot of reasons that COD clearly is not apolitical and then shrugs & says ‘guess they really are apolitical’. I mean I guess it’d be nice if the authors had a larger understanding of that stuff, but I think my problem is just that it’s less interesting to hear than all the things they do have original insight into and are clearly more interested in discussing.
(Which are good…i really like both those videos)
Matthewmatosis, one of the few excellent youtube game critics, released “part 3” of his Microvideos series. All three of them are very well done in terms of content and editing, worth checking out the first one at least and continuing on if you enjoy them.
isn’t he the “this game is a bunch of poopy ass butts!” guy
I’ve watched all of his videos and I don’t think any of them give off that vibe or are that negative overall?
The punchline to Mega Microvideos 3 killed me.
was I mixing him up with mike matei?
yes
this guy (Kreal) and ThorHighHeels have def been my favorite recent videogame youtuber discoveries. speaking of which:
JW (one half of Vlambeer, also worked on Minit / Disc Room) is talking about his videogames on twitch and uploading the streams to youtube. Nothing groundbreaking but it’s nice
He said he didn’t play Mario Bros Arcade before making Super Crate Box, somehow (though he did watch videos of it)
Has a bunch of good Yakuza and Dragon Quest retrospective reviews, though I think the latest video is the most SB of all, since Rudie’s been saying this kind of stuff for years:
It’s kinda funny because of the HP crew, Rudie is way better at finishing things than I am.
Am dealing with this crisis right now since I can’t really play any games and it’s been heaping nonsense consumer anxiety on to the usual anxiety pile. Was very useful to hear.
mostly just watching supergreatfriend right now who has some good detailed playthroughs of illbleed, siren, etc. would be glad to hear of any lowkey horror game letsplayers in a similar vein? have never watched a video essay and never will.
Nakano TRF (the arcade on the 4th floor of Nakano Broadway) has a new YouTube channel where they’ll be uploading tournament footage:
