oh yeah I mean I still think of myself as an insufferable obscurantist in every other respect, it’s just less trouble than explaining how I actually like God of War better than sekiro in both the mechanics and the presentation without getting dunked on for years

literally every time I meet another middle class person approaching middle age whose tastes have become conspicuously unchallenging in order to prioritize their other realities I silently judge them, I’m not in any danger of softening here

it is objectively hilarious that AAA writing has seemingly moved on from dad protagonist to divorced dad protagonist but the writing really isn’t too bad considering

I’ve spent more time in menus in Destiny than playing anything else this year ;_;

My most played game of the year was Disgaea 4 and 5 if you count them as one game, so we’re menu buddies I suppose

most of my time was spent managing and selling inventory in ffxiv. god i love micromanaging my store stock and always checking prices to undercut the right person its a whole game in itself

my worst this year would be death stranding, sekiro and sayonara wild hearts. oh and i guess untitled goose game

-you cant play a courier game without a custom soundtrack. also kojima doesnt get a pass to be disgusting to women. i cant let it slide. i let myself buy into SB hype at branson, oops
-please stop calling me, fromsoft
-you cant have a rhythm game without rhythm. i am not fooled by a stylized infinite runner
-you cant make me play hitman

i havent played baba is you because i am a coward who is afraid of feeling stupid, even though i used to love sokoban and klik n play. now that i got that 8bitdo i might try it. Looking through the thread and seeing just how much people loved it make me intensely curious, fear aside!

this is 100% my least favorite part of ff14 and it puts me into a panic when i start approaching the threshold of myself and my retainer’s inventories because of all the random items i keep getting that “i guess i should hold onto” in case i ever decide to level other classes or crafting

stuff I’ve played since this post which would go on the list as well:

Lonely Mountains
Song of Bloom

I played Wattam so now I can do my OFFICIAL top ten:

  1. Slay the Spire (I’ve put so many hours into it that I can’t not give it #1)
  2. Disco Elysium
  3. Sekiro
  4. Hypnospace Outlaw
  5. Anodyne 2
  6. Outer Wilds
  7. Mario Maker 2
  8. Devotion
  9. Wattam
  10. Death Stranding

curious what you liked about wattam! I found it immensely perfunctory (apart from the one very good bit of frantically saying excuse me while flying into the sun

That moment was definitely a highlight.

I liked the sunny disposition of it, the way it looks at the world through a baby’s eyes, the sudden shifts into deep emotions whenever you get a bit of backstory, and the choice you make at the end. Also the music is amazing.

I mean, it’s no Katamari. It’s definitely pretty slight. But damnit, nobody makes games like this.

Guess I’m just gonna post a list of games I’ve seen the credits roll in like last year sue me.

It’s from newest to oldest because I forgot to switch sort order, and it’s missing Judgment, but I finished that on new year’s eve, so kinda doesn’t count maybe.

So many Yakuzas. I can’t stop, already ordered the Kiwamis. 7 this year? Fuck my credit card. Help.

Oh and I also played EDF5, but I already saw the credits roll in the JP release offline last year, and there’s no credits roll beating all missions online, or maybe there only is if you beat it on Inferno which I couldn’t because no time. Still good times. Still almost kinda regret spending $100 on Iron Rain.

Just going to mention again that Elemental Monster Online Card is my favorite CCG and I’m gonna cry when PS3 PSN goes down and it’s lost forever.

Also I haven’t played a Call of Dudes since the first on an old Windows XP PC in 2003? But CoD: InfWarf is CoD: Gundam Edition. Without giant robots (booh). Still good enough for me tho I have no standards.

I never played a Battlefield except 1 ( not the new “1”, but the first one) on a LAN party when I was still a whee teenage disaster. And Battlefield Hardline is just a stupid cop series on prime tv. Or maybe not prime. And yeah shooting poc is well hmm but you at least get points for not shooting them and cuffing is surprisingly satisfying. And and the last map was pretty big and open. Ugh.

Battlefield 1 is a ww1 blockbuster full of blockbusting setpieces. No shit. The flying reminded me of playing Wings on an Amiga 500 with more polygons and the Lawrence of Arabia missions had me playing a killer gal riding horses slaying dudes on an even bigger open map and I imagine and hope that’s what MGSV plays like. Wanna play that next/this year for sure now.

Never really played a Halo before either. I have some disjointed memories of not liking Halo 2 co-op on my friend’s Xbox during my school-going years and I did probably finish ODST with a different friend in between sessions of EDF2017, but fuck it’s all hazy. Now it’s already two years after the giant alien insect invasion and all my friends are somewhere else. Halo 5 I liked though.

Here are the 2019 games I played by now:

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
NUVAVULT
Tamashii

Out of those three I’ll say… Tamashii is my game of the year.
