TV Party (Part 1)

Guess it’s time I give true divisive S2 a watch. 3 sounded stronger but maybe that’s all familiar format talk.

Teenager. Good grief.

finally finished rewatching the Sopranos

I remembered liking the early seasons much more than the later ones and if anything I like the early ones even more now

i’m in season 5 of The Sopranos right now. i’d actually never watched the show before. i’m finding myself enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would, although it’s sometimes pretty hard to watch. i feel like i can sense that things are starting to go off the rails a bit, though.

honestly the thing that hit me the most with the show is how much Tony and Carmella’s relationship with each other reminded me of my own parents.

Season 5 is a bummer, no more light in that big house!

and that’s when Melfi kind of ceases to be a character in her own right which sucks (though the biggest loss season-to-season imo is Livia passing after #2, I honestly don’t think I’d have cared about the show in the first place without her). Buscemi’s character is mostly good imo but the New York stuff with Johnny Sack and Phil isn’t ever that compelling to me. great season for Adriana though and pretty good for Carmela (though tbh nothing tops the first season with the yiddish speaking priest who sublimates all sexual feeling through Scorsese movies for me there).

you know i’ve heard lots of people say that but if anything i think it might get better each season

(just the idea that it’s better earlier on, not anything specific you just said (johnny sack is beautiful))

I can definitely see the counterargument, but I like when everyone is still making incredibly stupid and novel mistakes because that makes it a much more endearing character study to me, and the growth is (more than usual) a loss most of the time for them

like… defiler? d-girl? pie o my? fucking love it

Season 1 leans too hard in being “Mafia Movie the TV show”. Sopranos is at its strongest when the crime aspect is merely a set dressing for the real show: a cutting critique of late 20th century upper middle class America and psychotherapy. Still the champion of “prestige HBO television” as it rejected any sort of long-running plot and it understood a television show is ultimately individual 30-60 minute episodes, not chapters of an overindulgent 80 hour movie.

I do agree that losing Livia was a huge blow. Season 6 also isn’t that great.

if I had to I think I would probably go

1 = 2 > 4 > 3 = 5 = 6

i don’t really think i have a season-by-season ranking, i think it’s all really consistently great, it’s more that i have a handful of bits i don’t like throughout and they mostly congregate toward the earlier seasons

overcome with sincere dread whenever i’m about to watch the cg livia sequence

HOLY SHIT TIGER KING!!! this dude was in another exotic animal documentary that’s whole climax was this horrible electrical failure during the rain that made all the big cats standing in water lose their minds and run around in horrible pain and suffering til they died of electrocution. it was played up for shock value and the lions that died were the ones the doc builds up hope for (instead of focusing on exotic animals that maybe DID have hope). it wasnt joes animals that died, the places they went to were IN MUCH WORSE CONDITION but its neat to see something diving way way deeper into what i want

as soon as i heard it was rhe wild wild country guy i was like ‘but this isnt about a sex cult’ OOPS OOPS I ATE THOSE WORDS

I don’t know what Tiger King is. All I know is some thing I saw on Twitter about a trans man being consistently misgendered through the whole thing?

that’s… awful. i don’t want to see any of this tiger king stuff based on the social media response to it

i dunno what social media is saying because twitter cancels everything that isnt a queer coded childrens show, but its a good as fuck documentary and my non fiction to fiction moviewatch ratio is 5:1

is saff a trans man? that hasnt come up yet at all thats interesting, like maybe its a SHITTY TWIST LATER, i have a couple episodes left maybe itll come up?

one of the best trans man reality shows i saw was small town security, and it involves a lot of misgendering by the people around him but its also sympathetic

it turns out that small town yokels dont even know trans men exist half the time because the media is so busy demonizing trans women

small town security is such an incredibly off-putting show until you realize the camera crew is really rooting for dennis and the show becomes about him dealing with being trans in a weird shitty place. also the finale is incredible.

Tyson foods being the bad guy and the documentary crew being reddit conspiracy theorists was good

No, they cancel those too and call their creators fascist apologists if they don’t end in a vengeful massacre.

Yeah he is, I don’t think it ever comes up because the director had to clarify it separately. Apparently he gets misgendered and deadnamed a lot.
