I swear this was a trope in games in the 90s/00s but I can’t think of any besides Zelda64/LA and NiGHTS Wii. Did I just make this up? What other games have owls that wouldn’t shut up and explained the entire game to you?
King’s Quest V?
Blathers is kinda a tutorial for his section of Animal Crossing.
This guy is the training character for Soul Calibur 3
persona we are the same
like in my imagination this was a common thing in jrpgs and then the tigsource era of indie games but i feel like maybe it was just some random webcomic or something
Dark Cloud’s second dungeon is overseen by a large owl; but the second area is beyond “tutorial”.
This is my SB 2025 thread of the year prize early favourite.
Tutoriowls, please
Give a hoot! Collect health spheres to replenish!
i think i truly matured when i realized that Kaepora Gaebora asking “you want me to repeat that?” and the answer defaulting to YES is actually pretty funny. especially since his tutoriowl dialogue skips faster than basically any other NPC in the series. it’s like a smaller version of Buzz-Buzz asking if you want him to repeat his long story while he’s on the verge of death (which i accidentally have him do every single time i replay earthbound)
This is the only owl in the game and it only explains this
Omg this keeps happening
I swear this was a thing, I even made a short animation about it back in the day but history has decided to nuke the existence of this and now we’re left looking like fools
In Owlboy, you receive a tutorial while being an owl.
Technically the tutorial jerk in Owlboy is also an owl as well
this is obviously inspired by the king’s quest owl and really only tangentially related but it’s a good funny worthikids animation starring my 2nd or 3rd favorite mcelroy
Links Awakening has the wise owl who is sort of watching over you
I cannot recall all the times they visit you. In the intro with the sword, the first instrument and ???
they make sporadic appearances after that, most notably right after you discover the Wind Fish prophecy (which they feature in) plus there are the owl statues on the overworld that give you cryptic messages (SEA BEARS FOAM, SLEEP BEARS DREAMS. BOTH END IN THE SAME WAY CRASSSH!) and in dungeons in the DX version that give you hints (replacing a generic hint slab from the original version)
Oh yes I remember the prophecy and poem totems. The gameboy hooting as the owl floats down will live in my head forever. I should try the dx version.
