they announced one thing I actually wanted at CES after all, a 256gb usb in this form factor:

like, holy… moly. i am still surprised they could package 32gb in such a space (or rather: antispace), and they quadrouple that number.

Too bad it’ll cost a premium, and USB hubs are too slow to build a ZFS-raid just because it is POSSIBLE… yet…

Never forget

I work at a college book store and some dude wrangled some sort of aid money to buy him a 128gb version of one of these.

I don’t have the money to move on something like this anyway but go ahead and tell me why this sucks

I would like to think that unless you want a PC in DS form-factor, you would probably be better served with a similarly priced laptop and 360 pad

also the general takeaway is the same thing I keep hammering on about here – modern GPUs need a lot of juice by design, and you can only cut them down so far before they are bad. the switch gets away with it because all the games released for it are heavily optimized for that tegra platform; any regular-ass PC release you try to run on that thing will not be fun. you’d be much better served to invest in good WiFi equipment and a Moonlight + MFi controller solution for streaming to your phone from a PC if you want something that works in that form factor.

apropos of nothing, learned about this today while thinking “I should really update the OSX VM I use for occasional builds since mavericks isn’t supported anymore”

I/O and 3D acceleration in virtualized OSX are still terrible so you wouldn’t really want to use it other than when you need it but that’s a lot cleaner than it used to be

(unlike vmware, virtualbox has never implicitly blocked OSX guests but it’s not able to understand apple’s EFI so you have to use a hackintosh bios shim if you want to run it that way which is more trouble than it’s worth)

I can’t even build a new pc now because bitcoin liberated all the affordable videocards

this is where I would tell you to buy like, a used card not suited for mining (read: a Maxwell card, like a 970 or 980 Ti) but whoops the shortage of readily available cards in the retail channel has shifted demand over in that direction and Maxwell cards are worth money again

on the other hand, the used 290 I bought two years ago is going for more than what I paid now. I should cash out.

my computer keeps doing this thing where after not even being on that long or doing that much it stops loading thumbnails and icons in folders and the address bar does the green bar loading thing eternally for every window until I reset.

oh, it turns out Microcenter has jacked up the prices on all GPUs but give you a hilarious discount if you also buy everything else to build a system at the same time

I don’t know if this is the answer the market needs, essentially forced bundles to “ensure” that GPUs get used for games and not mining but it’s a start?

this is probably the disk if anything, but it might also just be windows

I have ten disks and they all do it

are they getting the power they need?

like, try paring it down and seeing if you can reproduce the issue

half are in the computer half are in external things and I just moved one out the other day and that didn’t change anything.

that’s not bad, but it doesn’t do much for people like me who last built a new system in 2013 and just waited to put a GPU in it for three years

Both of my GPUs are worth significantly more than I paid for them. Is this jocular or sound advice? I could happily play Switch games exclusively for a year.
