was trying to use geforce experience to take screenshots of dx12 games and it worked great like the very first time I installed it and I could even use it to take screenshots of tonemapped uhd stuff but it hasn’t worked consistently since then. the shortcuts just quit working for some reason. I can bring up the overlay and hit screenshot button, which half the time it includes the overlay in the screenshot. I can’t even bring up the setup screen except through the overlay either.

hey it turns out the answer to this is Gnome was a fat pile of nice looking shit and I switched over to KDE Plasma as my DE and I can barely push memory usage past 4-5 gigs
even with this “solved” I will still probably spend some of my dwindling monetary reserves on booze and do some dumbassed distrohopping when the inclination takes me
KDE was the acronym for KDE does (still) Exist?
… right, I concur that this was a weak jab at a buried and dead body, but the hate of using Kubuntu 7.x flavor and the always hilarious kbomb quitting applications has made me avoid anything KDE-related for 13 years by now, and it is like thinking of an ex-ex-ex-ex partner and the faint glimmer of hate instilled by a bad relationship, and it is almost like you became acquaintainces with those memories over the years, that it is a part of your identity.
Yep, the kbomb has crossed the boundaries of my subconsciousness and became a part of my personality. If there’d ever be a movie set inside my mind, the kbomb would be the almost always comically bad irem endings that true fans go for first.
… actually, that’d be a good netflix show pitch:
“How i learned to stop using KDE and embraced the KDE bomb”.
that’s too bad, Gnome had been getting a lot better from like 2014-2018, I’ve been checked out since then though
I haven’t gotten along with KDE since the early 2000s, they take the weirdest UX cues from other platforms
just switch to xfce, live in filth
xfce like, intentionally does nothing and a lot of the gtk maintainers are some of the most genuinely sensible people in the Linux UX community, you can tell they haven’t like, deliberately avoided ever touching a Mac in their lives
but Gnome has definitely gone through periods of getting really bloated which hurts its reputation
the gnome desktop experience is best summarized like this:
if you don’t customize to own it, you have never experienced true desktopping serenty, nor madness. Which I totally understand as being a good thing, mind you. My currently longtime running 1804LTS installation has basically seen the tiniest amount of customization i’ve ever put into it, since my T450s is mostly a work appliance for developing, so i didn’t want to meddle with it too much, but the fun part about Gnome3 always was to bend it into shape, even if it meant destroying at least one installation in the process.
...
and that's what you call Stockholm syndrom, if you wondered. (partly serious about it. If you don't give me too many options to configure, i am not going to be in awe of your desktop Xperience.... but that is another rabbithole to go down, for another post)
lucky me that i don’t understand french well enough to follow what is said in that video, but that is the kind of hands-on i am totally on-board with. That’s the info i wanted about the XB4, and it is sub-zero cool that there is someone out there that gets it.
In short, the design goal of the XB4 seems to have been a noctua fan mod, period.
people still buy vinyl, why can’t one person out there just put out a gsync 16:9 crt, like 24 inches or so
could game pass for PC be couched in a shittier series of programs? I’ve had several issues lately where I couldn’t launch any games. multiple times I had to download stealth windows updates that the windows updater would not detect without several restarts. prior to that, I ran into the well known “can’t actually play multiplayer games” error, the solution to which was so convoluted that I don’t remember it. then I ran into an issue where everythign downloaded unbearably slowly. several solutions to that problem later, it has devolved to the point where any attempt whatsoever to install any game from the xbox app, or any program at all from the MS store, will crash windows entirely.
short answer is it is far too expensive and no one would pay for it.
give me 16:10
I’m unconvinced people wouldn’t pay. but it sounds like you can’t really make a new crt tv, it’s just a guy stuck making old ones with old materials. and when all the old people who knew how to make them die crt’s will be lost to time like greek fire
CRTs will be attainable for the remainder of our lives and that is all that matters. The knowledge isn’t going anywhere unless all history evaporates, etc.
The knowledge in general exists - an electron gun with a yoke and so on - but the specific knowledge of what was tried and didn’t work will problem be lost forever. Plus any ancillary industries like the chemical production of phosphor coatings have continued to evolve and long ago stopped making anything that no one but the crt industry wanted. It may still be technically possible to make a few in the artisanal sense but a good crt requires not just the knowledge you can find in patent applications but also a broad array of industrial processes and materials that don’t exist at any price in 2020.
I mean, there will def. never be any high-spec CRTs made ever again. Keeping the extant examples operational will fall to art institutions and maybe slowly become impossible, etc. What and how they are and were are more important.
Could be time to upgrade my phone but the market has become inundated with versions since I picked up my Galaxy S7 years ago. Not sure what’s the phone I want, the one that is not super stupid beefy but also not bare minimum. I looked into the Pixel 4a and came away thinking it’s like the tech pragmatist’s phone, basically competent at its major features but can get bogged down performance-wise in actual practice. I’m not playing games on my phone (wouldn’t be opposed to portable game emulation through retroarch tho), mostly browsing checking email taking pics and watching vidz. Anyone got a good recommendation? I don’t really want to get into apple hardware tbh.
A few glitches aside, my Pixel 4a was a pretty clear upgrade from the Pixel XL I’d been using for a few years. My biggest complaint is the fingerprint sensor can be a little finicky. I’d say it’s not a bad choice especially if you can get a deal on one
