I don’t use it super hard, but I’ve found Arch (through the now-defunct Antergos installer) with KDE to be comfy and extremely low-maintenance. It absolutely leaves me the hell alone and KMines is superior to the new Windows Minesweeper.
it depends on what games you want to play
if you’re almostl entirely singleplayer stuff, I would mess around with doing just linux and seeing what performance looks like for the games you want to play
if you’re going to play bleeding edge new games or mix in a lot of multiplayer, I would dual boot
if you’re fucking insane, you can set up a VM with its own GPU and chunk of ram and run things natively while never leaving linux but doing this means you’re insane
that’s probably the reasonable thing to do right now. i’ve just never developed in a non-POSIX-like environment and it seems like Microsoft’s general push is towards increased linux integration into the Windows dev environment so i’m choosing WSL quirks over msys quirks.
Thanks for the advice, everyone.
My big hurdle right now is, uhhh, the stylus that came with my laptop has the damn nib snapped off in it, right out of the box. Cool stuff! They’re sending me a new one, but dang, I wanted to do some sketchin’.
Clown Mode never ends.
After sweatily prying off the back of the laptop and trying not to destroy the tiny battery connector to unplug it, I successfully upgraded the SSD from a wimpy little half 256 GB stick to a 1 TB drive. Cool!
I opted for a clean install of Windows, and uhhhh whoops! Whoops!
I always figured stuff like, I dunno, bios settings and whatnot were tied to the motherboard. But I guess not so much?
Anyway, long story short - this thing has two ports to charge from, an old barrel style one and USB C. It came with a USB C charger. Said charger works! The USB C drive also works! But now it won’t charge from the USB C port, and I can’t flash a bios upgrade without it being connected to AC power.
So I guess I’m gonna get one of those universal laptop chargers and, uh, charge it long enough to flash the bios and hopefully get that other charger working again.
Fun stuff! Remembering why I strayed from laptops in the first place.
Edit: Fixed it

Now to figure out this Steam Proton shit, which seems to just make games crash before they even boot.
lol
coming 2021, 14nm++++++++++++++ OCed to 7ghz in the vacuum of space
I am trying to get a craigslist guy to delid my 3570K because the overclock is no longer tolerating the summer heat very well and I still don’t feel like getting a Ryzen 3700 yet because that’s going to turn into $1000 of parts I’d also need/want to buy and he’s being about as flaky as you would imagine a guy who offers delidding on craigslist to be
ah good I nailed this slippery fella down
four more years, etc
I really love the way it occasionally winces at me when I have two different bluetooth audio outputs and two different bluetooth input devices connected concurrently at the same time as it’s got a solid 1.3gbit wifi connection all through this ancient miniPCIe wireless card sharing the same bus with a Titan Xp on a first-generation PCIe3 slot
I’m also using every SATA plug on this board, including the mSATA SSD slot, and all of the USB3s, and it’s been overclocked on stock cooling in an ITX case for 8 years and I’m frequently running some tensorflow thing in the background I forgot about while copying files to my NAS and running 3 video streams on different monitors
stick with me, old friend, we wil go far
Are you playing 3 videos just because you can? How can you possibly pay attention to that much stuff
it’s usually like, a mets game (CESPEDES HOME RUN WOOOOOOOOOOO), a zoom call I don’t need to contribute to for more than five minutes but should appear to be engaged by, and maybe someone’s twitch stream or a dumb movie that’s pleasant to ignore
You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like
Also is delidding as literal as what I am imagining
You put the lid back on afterward
Then it’s re-lidding!
Why I oughta
can’t wait to get one of these ampere cards and get back to red dead 2 and try to scrape what sbmeetup feelings I can off the outlaw camp
delid big success, 3570k running like it’s 2012 baby
So with the recent processor delays, somebody tell me when would be a good time to put together a new rig. I’m crippled on upgrades based on my motherboard, and rather than take everything apart and put in a new one, it feels like that’s the time to put together a whole new machine.
september or so when zen 3 comes out
