they will have to run at the slowest possible timing they can sync to, so you do want to match the timings if possible (look for a number like 10-10-10-27), but it shouldn’t be more than a 5% hit to most workloads in the absolute worst case if you can’t
I need another hour or so to polish this but I’ll probably do a release next week
Surprised to find that my RAM was actually the bottleneck for constant 144 FPS, at least in Destiny. When I built this PC the conventional wisdom was that 2666 mhz was fine but now update that to it might come into play if you’re seeing weird inconsistencies but it is still fine.
Haven’t messed with overclocking it beyond the XMP profile but apparently you can crank this Samsung die up.
I cut myself on the heatsink
My WD external hard drive arrived today, and it’s giving me, “Windows does not recognize this device.” Should I return it or try to fix it?
- See if it shows up in Device Manager and try to update drivers
- Open Disk Management and see if it shows up there, then try to reformat/partition
If neither of these work, yeah, RMA
RAM speed on Ryzen is always “get it running as fast as possible while remaining stable”, a thing getting even dumber with 4000 series stuff since they can slightly decouple the Infinity Fabric from RAM speed
anyway, the real reason it’s faster is you gave your PC a blood sacrifice
It’s Coffee Lake Intel so I really wasn’t expecting a change.
everyone gets a benefit from more everything
that’s why they sell fancy kits with terrible timings
Final-Fantasy-ass processor technology
oh it’s just a name for a interconnect bus allowing AMD to glue processors together
they have the great problem of having relatively low faulty fabbed dies and combined with the IF, they have very little in the way of waste from wafers
part of the reason why they have such a wide stack of consumer processors is they have too many cores
googling “WD181KRYZ” every day just waiting for it to show up for sale somewhere in the u.s.
I was 100% shitposting but this is super interesting.
What’s this opening up a laptop and redoing the thermal paste all about. Mine seemed to run pretty hot tonight.
depends on how old the laptop and how well documented the cooling assembly is
a lot of laptops just have very loud fans and very poor heat dispersion which makes people think they’re “overheating” when it’s maxing at 80c like it’s supposed to, so I’d see whether it’s actually throttling (for non-voltage reasons) and whether it’s idling badly first
You can also get some thermal improvement by just blowing out dust and detritus with compressed air or a blower. (I got a cheap-o blower tool after realizing compressed air seemed bad for the environment and cold in my hands.)
Do not blow compressed air INTO a fan.
Do it through the intake vents
I was thinking about upgrading from my ancient Radeon R9 270X to a GeForce GTX 1650 S since it’s on sale-ish and my Radeon has been giving me a lot of problems. Is the 1650 S worth it? It seems to be a pretty big jump over the 1650 Vanilla. I mostly emulate, and I don’t generally play newer games, but I’d like the option of being able to play newer games should something interest me. Would the RX 590 be a better deal?
just idle curiosity here but is there much difference between nvidia and AMD GPUs these days?
like, technology wise or “which should I buy”-wise?
nvidia inarguably has the performance crown right now but they’re both competitive in the midrange
tech wise i guess! last i knew AMD was cheaper but ran hotter, but that was years ago
