Just as a follow up I picked up an AMPLIFI HD router on the cheap from EBay thinking I would pick up one mesh point later but it seems that it has more or less solved my problem. Connections at both the PC in the bedroom and the TV/PS4 in the living room are stable, even if they are only getting 30-60mbps of the 500mbps I get when standing right next to the router.

I did take my old Asus router and set it up in bridge mode and I was getting 200-300mbps when set up that way, but it kept dropping connection for some reason, so I shelved it and am satisfied with the current solution until I pick up a 6e router in a year or two.

Parallel I’m surprised to see because it uses so many pins but every full atx motherboard I have ever had has had a serial port on it. I’ve even used the one on my most recent z170 board. They still come in handy if you ever deal with lab test equipment, network equipment, or embedded systems work. I’m a little surprised they haven’t forced you to get a card for it at this point, but maybe it’s just baked into the io chip and would be not worth the effort to remove.

the good news is that you can get a USB serial port adapter very easily, it’s not like a floppy controller

when I got this computer I wondered if on account of the ssd it would ever even reach a point where it would feel like an “old computer” now I’m wondering if it can even make it to september

I’m occasionally surprised that my overclocked-to-hell-on-stock-cooling-in-an-ITX-case 8 year old 3570K is still doing absolutely 100% fine, trying to think if my arbitrary cutoff for replacing it is going to be “when there’s DDR5 Ryzen” or what at this point, the issue is that I have zero incentive to replace the GPU until 5nm at least and I don’t really feel like just doing a swap and leaving this thing GPU-less out of loyalty to it

also I haven’t done any CUDA stuff in a while and I’m not sure if nvidia will give me a free GPU again

I forget where but I saw some “Ultimate Gaming Rig” being the prize of a contest and they said it had 128 gigs of RAM and I had to L my fukken A O because dear god I’ve got 16gb and that feels like it’s somehow still future-proof

yeah 16 was both gettable for ~$100 almost a decade ago and still fine for all games, quite a sweet spot there

honestly my relatively cheap four year old 6600/1060 has only gone <60fps in a few notoriously shitty ports and control and i wouldn’t be arsed about upgrading any time soon if i hadn’t seen some youtuber running 60fps demon’s on a £150 ryzen while my shit was a slideshow

what a fuckin mark i am

I’m pretty sure I can run demon’s fullspeed on here?

I can’t do skate 3 or fight night in rpcs3 but demon’s and vf5 are fine

anyone saying 16 gigs of ram is enough is either a lying son of a bachelor or just not living

I get by with 8

8 is the normal computer/light gaming/emu box amount because, quite frankly, going lower means you probably just bought one stick and what the fuck are you doing

16 is the “I play gaem” amount now

32 is the “no mom, I’m not a Youtuber, I’m a content creator” amount

64 and up is “hi I do big computer stuff for job” amount

1TB and up is “I bought a Mac Pro”

I run multiple docker instances and ffmpeg/OBS shit concurrently and I’ve never gotten close to feeling memory pressure at 16GB, I wonder what I’m doing wrong
