I think a rogue windows update emptied out my downloads folder and took out all my porn

the downloads folder though?

c’mon man

Genuinely had no idea that a folder could be treated so cavalierly by the OS. Besides, I’d cleverly nested everything in a New Folder! Nobody would have ever accessed the goods in the event of my untimely demise

New Folder for the Old Ceremony

My router ain’t doing too well. It’s making playing WoW and other online games difficult/impossible. I keep having to cycle it for my consoles to connect to it. If I run the cable modem directly to my PC, my speeds in WoW are fine. If I go through the router, it can get up to 4000 to 6000 ms on home as opposed to world. But my xbox one works fine for connecting to Halo matchmaking. Do I need a new router or do I need to check some settings/remove addons/update firmware? And if I need a new router, where is the best place to look for reviews?

I don’t hate it

since no one responded to this – there’s a chance it’s something on your computer’s side, but it really wouldn’t hurt to get a new router if you’re open to the possibility.

my favourite current-ish-so-cheap-if-you-can-find-it-secondhand router is the Archer C2600 – there’s a new version called the Archer A10 which is a totally different chipset that removes the USB ports, which I definitely wouldn’t recommend getting, so you’ll have to look around a bit for that one. in general, you can do really well for ~$100, but 4x4 802.11ac qualcomm chipsets are still my gold standard until wifi 6 (802.11ax) becomes a bit more common.

250G really wasn’t enough for a boot drive, I was so sure I wasn’t cheaping out on this SSD four years ago, darn

no one should have this many symlinks across drives on windows

what is the purpose of USB ports on a router though

like what do they even do

you don’t typically need them to network a printer anymore but you can rig them up like a cheap NAS

I have that archer router, and I very much like it. I keep a usb thumb drive with music and a rotating selection of movies because the drive automatically pops up as an input for my tv

lovin’ it

yeah if I didn’t have work paying for Office and Creative Cloud and GPUs for me I’d probably still be on Linux, the Platform Synergies these days are a bit much

god, and that ‘How are we doing? Rate us on the app store’ popup for default apps!

I’m positive this is group-determined Best Practices run amok, applied in a very Microsoft-esque-way to completely inappropriate internal projects to model good behavior

Docker does this too which is somehow even more lol

that’s a pelican equipment case not a luggage case tho

I mean it would be cooler if it were really a suitcase

Thanks for helping out, I appreciate it. I connected the router wirelessly instead of using a network cable and my WoW speeds are back to normal. So I am thinking I should just change the cable.

is there a reason for me to avoid NAS-specific hard drives in a computer that hibernates at night? I remember something about the drive head starting or stopping dangerously, but I have no clue if that’s [still] something to really worry about.

definitely not, a good NAS will still spin down your drive when it’s not being accessed (especially if it’s redundant, which it should be) like any other enclosure
