when people describe western fantasy to me, this is what I wish they were describing
Amano did jp covers for both Elric of Melnibone and The Book of the New Sun and its so much closer to how I imagine both works than the usual covers those books get in america

Elric definitely, wow he’s perfect (though I’m fond of the artist whose name I can’t find right now) who did these covers:
I’m kind of weirded out seeing Severian in blue and yellow in the sun, face naked and open
that’s the cover of the fourth book when Severian is the autarch
For reference, the first two look like this with a much more usual looking Severian

he’s much more externalized in his costume than I anticipate but the faded energy fits well
I assume that’s a represeentation of the Botanic Garden? what a lovely inside-looking green
probably the biggest liberty that Amano takes is that Severian isn’t bare-chested while dressed as a torturer. It’s an odd kind of liberty given the attention to detail (Terminus Est is the right shape, the cloak is properly fuligin, the plants in the background are at least evocative of the avern)
