one thing I do not like about this game is that I seem to be above-average at it; on PC bounty hunt I’ve played enough to be level 8 or 9 and I am reliably one of the top two scores on my team. I kind of suck at shooters so this bugs me.
In the Geoff Keighley faux-embedded piece about the first game, IIRC Steve Fukuda or Vince described the bot farming and smart pistol as solutions to “no shooters for old men.” The idea is to lessen the meat grinder feel for less skilled or frequent shooter players. I find that by virtue of playing the fucken objective I score higher than a lot of folks trying to get kills on PCs.

I picked this up over the weekend and I am pretty bad at running around, still having a lot of fun with the grappling hook though
this free weekend has officially made me consistently great at a first person shooter relative to the competition for the first time since like 1998
It’s so much fun to be aggressive in this game, and the level design is so good. I still pretty much only play bounty hunt but I’ve gotten a really satisfying amount of time out of the multi.
so I guess the lesson of the campaign is
you really can kill your dog and eat it too

edit: imma elaborate on why I think this game is dope a little
it seems like a lot of multiplayer shooters that came out this year only hold up past the initial infatuation period if you have a group of people that you can regularly play with and you understand each other’s skills/weaknesses/etc. titanfall 2 seems predominantly focused on your own performance and bettering yourself, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing because I’m kind of an introvert when I play multiplayer online things – I like to play by myself (not that I won’t play with y’all, I’m just like that in general) and see how good I can get on my own without anyone else
I think that’s why I fell off overwatch (and team fortress 2 way back when) relatively quickly - it seems like past a certain point your worth in the game is determined by your ability to Do Teamwork, and I appreciate that in video games for sure, but it seems like outside of having a team that you can do that with, you just have to get lucky if you’re going to do the solo queue thing. but for a lot of games where this dynamic exists, it just doesn’t feel good to go through the grind of solo queue
so titanfall 2 (and heroes of the storm lol) are two games where just playing the game feels good regardless of whether you’re winning or losing or contributing or not! wallrunning is fun and actively contributes to positioning, if you’re bad at shooting players you have a bunch of AI soldiers to shoot, if you’re bad at being a foot-pilot you summon a titan and the game just CHANGES. I know @Felix has complained about the walk back from dying in overwatch and has had it explained as a way to compel players to Teamwork by getting people to stick together, but it’s suuuuper boring to just walk back even with movement options. titanfall 2 lets you “practice” these soft skills as you run back to the battle, whereas overwatch’s design is such that the only way you can meaningfully play the game is to interact with other players, which seems like a “duh” thing for a multiplayer shooter, but it also only provides one meaningful mode of play
