out of the stuff i’ve heard on this list i basically agree except for chappell who has a sing-songy cadence that i can’t vibe with (i think it’s an intentional effect in terms of how she presents herself & the subject matter of her songs i just find it unpleasant & grating)

with her i think the songs are just killer. she also has the best voice in american pop music, bar none, i think? her voice runs laps around billie eilish

i think it’s only because chappell is willing to be divisive that i love her as much as i do. it cuts against the endemic industry instinct which is to be as utterly safe as possible. i think she’s the real deal as an artist, and the fact that she doesn’t appeal to so many, juxtaposed against the exceptionally powerful feelings i get listening to and analyzing her songs and voice, makes me think it’s a feature, not a bug (not to assume you think differently etc)

i made the mistake of expressing my opinion that sabrina is very legit at a party and the people in my friend group were pretty fucking down on it, haha
my friend max said it’s “hot girl music”
for me, the songs are great. her voice is great. she has personality, she’s not homogenized shit (yet, anyway). the synthesis of her influences is pretty ideal for me

i tried to sing please please please at karaoke and that song humbled me, her range is sick
i’ve spoken about it before but i don’t think i believe at all in guilty pleasures. i think sometimes maybe i’m over-conscious at what other people might think of my taste, but if i like it i like it. i remember feeling guilty listening to, idk, backstreet boys or something when i was a kid and now it’s like. damn that was an utterly worthless feeling, entirely devoid of value. lemme not do that anymore

it was negative the way he used it yeah haha
she touches certain nerves in people and i find people-watching discussions about her fascinating but also exhausting to a degree. i had an initial “ew” reaction to seeing the album art before i heard a note. i had pretty much dismissed her without even hearing her, but my brother sent me that chappell roan cover and i was like, whoa, this woman is legit as hell. it’s in her phrasing and interpretation, how that song is still kinda new but she’s already breathing something new and special and unique into it. interpretative mastery and exceptional phrasing, those are key tells for someone to watch for me
then i listened to her record and i like her songwriting too. i think the exact avenue you arrive to her by can make a difference here

they’re probably too online – back when i was on twitter i couldn’t go a day without hearing about sabrina or chappell; the ubiquity was aggressive. at some point it gets hard to separate the artist from the fans.
