they found a new weirdo SNES RPG

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/lennus/lennus.htm

i definitely thought Paladin’s Quest was a known, albeit obscure, quantity
i didnt know it had a sequel, though
Both games have a really great cartoon look that im super into, i wish they were less apparently tedious to play.

I played both of these! Here’s what I remember as interesting:

  • They are No MP RPGs. Casting spells takes away from your health and health is replenished through reusable items with limited charges that are refilled in towns so you’re not buying 30 potions all the time. The “numbers game” in Lennus 1 is decent and fights feel strategic with regard to expending energy to save energy. I recall the enemies in Lennus 1 getting frustratingly powerful late game, though. Lennus 2 is a lot easier and fights are won very quickly and boringly.

  • The art direction, particularly of Lennus 1, is real weird and good as demonstrated earlier in the thread. The writing is not as remarkable. Lennus 2 begins with a unusual atmosphere, as you start the game as a resurrected deity and everybody in all the towns revere you as such which creates some interesting interactions.

  • Lennus 2 has an enormous central town, I remember it being several screens in length complete with slums, a business district with multiple armor and weapon shops, a dance school and a red light district. Much like the enormous towns in modern RPGs, it ends up being so big and thought out that everything competes for attention and little is able to grab it! I remember the town’s soundtrack so well that I can find it years later on youtube by looking for the right sound, but possibly only because I spent so much time listening to it in game.

  • Both games have character to them, which I think is really important for a game! They are only for JRPG deadheads, though.

Lennus 1 is the game where at some point you time travel to the past and everything is black-and-white there, right? And in the past, there is some kind of puzzle maze with an invincible FOE-type enemy who is faster than you and murders you if you touch it. As a kid, me and my friend got stuck there forever and never figured out how to solve it.

Lennus 1, as well as being pretty, was one of those games with a pretty harsh feeling to it. Like the world really doesn’t like you and would be just as happy if you died or quit the game. Many NPCs even openly react to your party that way, as I recall. Your character is some kind of pariah.

Yes to all counts. I completely forgot the maze!

In both games you start the game causing some manner of cataclysm. Lennus 1 has a really diverse world with a lot of different weird alien people. It has Namek trees with long bare trunks and a big ball of leaves at the top. There’s a town where everybody just says you smell bad and won’t have anything to do with you.

fuck, i need to play these games now.

Hmm, I just watched someone solve the maze on Youtube and it wasn’t a puzzle, just a stealth minigame with shitty visibility and lots of RNG.

That’s why I forgot it! Pretty awful dungeon design in general.

Okay: so these are the best/worst games. Makes sense.

I had honestly never heard of these games, and they sound like tedious messes.

I should check 'em out.
