Personally I think they’re both bullshit. I think Tamagotchi is better. I think Pokemon is better. I think Monster Rancher can suck it cuz I ain’t no breeder (yet). So my vote goes to Digimon by default.
But ignore me! Let’s see what you have to say! Please write so many words and get real excited or angry about monsters…as long as they’re not Pokemon. NO POKEMON TALK IN THIS THREAD. Anyone who tries that shit is getting banned.
I’m not a mod but I can make threats like that cuz I cheated and won the first annual Select Button Scorched Earth Tournament Of Death.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Monster Rancher. The intricacies are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics and animal husbandry most of the gameplay mechanics will go over a typical player’s head.
I never played any of these games but I did get REALLY into season 2 of the Digimon anime when I was in middle school. My sister and I would watch it every day before school. The tragic villain was a digifascist who kept building slave spires to control all the digimon in the digital world because he was lonely at school!
Season 01 and 02 are my favorite. Especially 02. I remember having to decide if I would watch Digimon or Pokemon because they both aired at around the same time, and I settled on Digimon because it was just a lot more interesting. They did stuff, I guess.
digimon is forever beyond me. what even is going on there. there’s so much.
will monster rancher ever revive? maybe as f2p mobage moenster rancher?
are the PS2 Monster Rancher games as much about obsessive stat grinding as the PS1/GBA/DS games?
can you get into dragon quest monsters if you can’t get into pokemon
what a weird time that created the winners and losers of this genre arms race
Dragon Quest Monsters is real real good. Never could get into any other Mon games except pokemon.
I like that in DQM the monsters are more temporary - you breed them and they disappear. It feels like catching additional monsters actually serves a purpose other than kleptomania and collectability syndrome.
pokemon is, obviously, the safe option. everyone knows this, even your parents. the tv show gets good, consistent timeslots on several different tv channels, and a ton of advertising and tie-ins.
digimon is pretty well known, but mainly (unfairly) is thought of as a cheap knock off of pokemon. it’s shown on a couple of channels, but it seems like it’s never in the same slot twice in a row, despite being a plot-heavy show. you only fins the merchandise in certain low-status shops.
monster rancher is the one only the weird kids know. no-one’s seen a legit copy of the game itself, but there’s a few pirate copies being lent around if you know who to ask. the cartoon airs at 4:30 am on a free to air satellite channel. you’ve never seen a single piece of merchandise.
(as a side note i actually have a deck of monster rancher playing cards. i think they were a gift from someone at an anime convention long long ago)
my dad sent me digimon trading cards from massachusetts when i was in custody of my grandma. i associate the digimon that is a pink mouse riding a yellow piece of shit with cops taking my dad away. my neighbor who was into dreamcast bootlegging in like 2004 got me into digimon world on ps1, then everyone was playing beyblade and stopped caring about battle creatures.
i remember reading something in a tips and tricks magazine that was like, a list of dvds and cds that made certain monsters in monster rancher. my mind was blown by the idea of the game developers programming something like
“uhh shrek special edition disc 2 should give you a level 200 demon”
At school a lot of the kids had the Gen 1 Digimon because a nearby Toys’ R Us had tons of them on clearance. It was kinda bizarre since this was like a year after they were popular but everyone in my grade was rocking them, myself included.
Monster Ran for a whole year on UPN at 6:30 in the morning right before school.
Let me tell you something: there’s only one fuckin’ monster in my pocket and my girl Holly helped me raise it from a CD of the Men In Black Soundtrack.
