i’ve 1-looped daifukkatsu a couple of times on console, pc and at an arcade.
as long as its version 1.5 it’s no big deal i guess?
every other 1cc is a huge “don’t know if i can ever repeat this”

I say I’ve never tried this, but I guess I did get to the point where I could play through Gradius 3 on the SNES without dying. I sometimes used only the laser with no options.
i guess the argument might be that ios dodonpachis don’t seem to cap your move speed for finger control (that i can tell)
i didn’t see a point using ship A vs ship B but apparently one of the differences is move speed
it seems to me that mouse control might be the ultimate controls for shmupping but i understand that offends purists also
id recommend finalburn neo over shmupmame, which afaik hasnt been updated in years and years. i think its main selling point was it had lower input latency, which at that time was egregious in mame
as far as survival games go dodonpachi and ketsui are really good and look and feel amazing with scoring systems you can kind of just ignore to no particular consequence and which dont reward you particularly much beyond the sheer pleasure of making a huge number bigger. which is! fun to be sure but…
also wide shot ships tend to dominate in cave games ime
yeah i was looking at some DOJ runs and it seems like slow movement with wide shot + laser used strategically on tougher enemies is the way to go to keep chain and survival
i do like the numbers go up aspect of score but i like it most when it wins you 1ups etc
i’ve got finalburn neo, i saw Mark of Electric Underground has something called ShmupArch but don’t feel like figuring that one out unless it’s massive improvement. MAME has terrible gui so ill prob stick with FBN
which is definitive ketsui version?
i think all the roms are basically the same but if u had a ps4 id say get the m2 ver.
if you prefer games a little less idk over the top than cave rayforce also looks and sounds amazing tbh that taito f3 swag is unmatched. batsugun is another great looking + sounding game without much of a score system and kind of the genesis of cave’s style
xexex is also rlly gorgeous kind of a psychedelic r-type
This is what Compile shooters are all about!
Agreeing with Minty here try out some compile games.
Yeah Compile loves to pile on the 1ups for score. When I 1cced GG Aleste, I think I had maybe hit double digits in total number of lives.
am enjoying this guy’s videos in terms of orienting myself to these games. gave the og ddp a couple credits worth of feeding, it seems a lot easier than doj, guess i might try some c-laser
shmupmame is deprecated, groovymame has completely replaced it
also worth noting that the low-latency mode from groovymame was added to vanilla mame a few years ago
iirc it’s either vanilla mame or groovymame
i like this vid of his!
another reason dodonpachi is easier than a lot of cave games is it gives you a huuuuge amount of bombs. bombs in cave games are 0 frame startup instant invincibility bullet cancels so like… theyre extremely good lol. and dodonpachi in particular gives you like 5 / extend so…
w/ cave games especially i think one of the best survival skills is just bombing on reflex. basically dying with bombs in stock in a cave game is like getting game overs in an rpg with potions in stock or w/e. i dont think theres a single instance in their softography where theres any benefit to getting a miss over using a bomb!
isn’t it fairly common for specialist arcades in japan to jimmy in a homemade autofire button on games that don’t have it as an option?
and of course, all but the first model of pc engine had autofire switches on their standard controllers
yes
play cho ren sha x68k
Garegga cabs will also let you set the rate of autofire because of how rank works in that game.

idk how this list was assembled but here’s a ranking of shmups by clear difficulty. 1-all means 1st loop so going by this most cave game 1st loops seem to hang out in the middle
can confirm that karous easy mode is 0 difficulty. just hold the fire button to win, pretty much
watched this video and my dodging has automatically leveled up… so that’s how u use a stick… who knew…
