Steam, I own and play so many STGs, including the previous version of this game, and this is the shit you give me:

Why?

Looks like the second series of R-Type Final 2 DLC stages is starting soon.

I’m hoping we get more from Delta (stage 5, ideally) and the final stage from Final 1.

I started playing Gradius V again as it was on my very delayed (for the obvious reasons) 2020 list of games to give a second shot after bouncing off them many years prior. The prior four of these games went well but I might be bouncing off of this harder than I did a decade ago. A large part of that is just that I’m no where near as practiced at this genre any longer but… well I as a rule generally hate boss rushes and dropping one of those in the second stage while I’m still trying to acclimate myself to the game makes learning the actual game such a slot. This is coming from someone who considers Ikaruga one of their favorite games of all time so I’m very open to liking a Treasure scrolling shooter, but I just always find the initial hump in this game to just not be much fun yet am always told that the 75+% of the game past it is really good and I don’t know that I’ll ever actually see any of it. I might just put it on very easy and give myself as many lives as possible.

I never liked ikaruga and always adored gradius V! honestly not sure why, it’s weirdly stately and punishes you severely for small errors while letting you become very very overpowered at the same time

There is an actual genre term named Gradius Syndrome where the difficulty of the game is drastically altered by you dying and losing all your power-ups, where in severe cases the common thought is you may as well quit back to the start if you die at the wrong place. Gradius V is better about this by giving you a chance to retrieve your options after death, but your second sentence shows that it is still in play to a degree. Some people dig that, some people it drives them nuts!

FWIW I have noticed that if I have the laser power-up I have a decent prayer against the bosses I’ve seen so far, but if I don’t I’m as likely to have them time out as I am to actually blow them up (after several deaths of course). It would be less of a problem if I wasn’t dying as much… or you know, if they didn’t put 4-5 bosses in a row right near the start of the game.
