The Shooting 20XX Part II: Simple 1500 Series

G-mode released a port of the mobile version of zanac, which as a known zanac-lover, I find really cool. What we really need, though, are more ports of MSX shmups. Aleste Collection is awesome but it isn’t complete without the MSX versions.

Yeah that’s I wanna know too. Can’t wait for the sb reviews to flood in already

R-Type Final 2 is oddly sterile. Maybe it’s a metaphor for the sorrow of the shmup death mission.

the demo did nothing for me, but i’ve never been a big r type person (and haven’t played final 1)

I reached the fifth boss in R-Type Final 2 but ran out of continues there. So far, I generally like the feel of the game but the stages do not feel quite as inspired as those in Delta or Final 1.

I also tried the two DLC levels that are available so far, and I was impressed with those. They are kind of like what Dimensions should have been, maybe. (I did not like Dimensions.) I’m really looking forward to seeing some stages that are more familiar to me redone. (These ones are from Leo and R-Type 3, which I’ve played but not nearly as much as other entries in the series.)

As in Final 1, a lot of this new game’s character is in the ships you unlock. It’s still a lot of fun to repeat a stage with a new ship and see what its weapons look like and how they change your approach. And I’m enjoying customizing each new ship that I register. (You can just leave them default, of course, and they look good that way.)

So far the music doesn’t have any melodies that really stand out to me, but neither did Final 1. Delta was the last game with really catchy songs.

I just discovered that this boss’s form and behavior vary based on the difficulty level. Some other minor things in the level are different as well, but I don’t yet know their significance, if any.

My current favorite ship that I’ve unlocked is “Dinner Bell.” I liked that one in Final 1 as well.

Speaking of unlocking ships, there are a few that require passwords and people on the Internet have found two of them so far:

  • For the ship about halfway down the first column, the password is granzella
  • For the third one in the top row (a good one), the password is loveandpeace

This game is reminding me how frustrating R-Type can be. But at the same time, the look of it has grown on me. I like the way your lasers reflect on the ceiling, etc. And there is more detail in some of the backgrounds than I noticed at first.

Unconnected Markeeters came out today and it’s pretty good! Fell off the series after Undefined Fantastic Object brought a new wrinkle mechanically before falling back to a formula although Wily Beast And Weakest Creature was a massive return to form that ranks up there with the best in the series. Here they’ve switched from a power up mechanic to a Fantasy Zone esque shop system which gives it a bit of variety. Only completed it twice so far but it might become more rewarding on Hard onwards.

Here’s the “Dinner Bell.”

And here is the floor reflecting the Dinner Bell’s lasers.

I reached the final stage tonight, but there was no way I was going to beat it after I died once and lost my upgrades. Also, it seems that it was just one of several alternate final stages.

I just unlocked a new ship called the “Disaster Report” that’s an improved version of the Dinner Bell. Here is that new ship fighting the hardest version of the first boss (which I have not yet been able to beat).

I have not made it past stage 4 yet due to limited time to play, but really loving the lighting in this game a lot.

There is one part in stage 4 that was giving me a lot of trouble, but I realized I just needed to use a ship with a more traditional blue weapon to clear out some of the hard-to-hit enemies.

I reached one of the endings tonight. Something happens after you finish the game that reminds me of Disaster Report 4 (which, incidentally, is suddenly available on disc again for PS4 for the first time in a while).

Although this game is punishing at times, I really like it.

Is this the first non-arcade R-Type game without an invincibility code? I guess with variable difficulty and generous checkpoints that’s not really necessary.

I’m looking forward to seeing more remade levels. I wonder if it’s possible that they will make more than they promised in the Kickstarter campaign.
