The Shooting 20XX Part II: Simple 1500 Series

Dogyuun as some sort of proto-Dodonpachi is pretty interesting to me and I’ve never really spent any time with it! But yeah I feel ya on not being that into Toaplan. Hi Rudie!

My PS4 died so I can’t play zed blade no more.

I’m playing PAL Raiden Project on an HDTV and I hate you all.

I sold almost all of my Neo Geo AES cartridge collection once Hamster went all-in on the Switch ACA Neo Geo series, and bought every single one of the 108 releases - no regrets. I’ve continued the weekly habit of Switch Arcade Archives (where they’re now up to 92 entries as of Plus Alpha’s release last week). So yeah, you could say I’m a fan. I almost want to provide running commentary on the weekly releases… maybe I’ll start that soon.

Anyway, in the main Arcade Archives line, Detana!! Twinbee is the best shooter they’ve released and I’ll fight anyone who disagrees. In the Hunt is also amazing, and I’m unreasonably excited for the upcoming first ever “perfect” port of Sunset Riders to console.

For the Neo Geo line: Neo Turf Masters is ALWAYS the answer to whatever question you may have. There are some great hori shooters though: Pulstar, Blazing Star, and I appreciate the hell out of Prehistoric Isle 2 getting an official release on a mainstream console in 2018. And all the fighters, Metal Slugs, and janky brawlers you can shake a stick at!

I ordered sonic wings special. Oh god, it’s a pre - psikyo game isn’t it. I’m scared.

As someone who likes the 80s to early 90s style shmups, I’m pretty excited for these Toaplan games. I’m also a big fan of Arcade Archives since they have a fair number of these.

The games I’ve spent the most time on are Terra Cresta and Rygar. I find Rygar oddly compelling for some reason. The South/Southeast Asian ambiance is fantastic.

I also kinda like Image Fight, but I’m terrible at any shmup that has environmental collisions.

Don’t sleep on Johnny Turbo’s Arcade either! Super Real Darwin is weird and amazing.

Toaplan was great. M2’s choices for ports seem erratic. Kind of curious if there is a story there.
How are they choosing these games?

Don’t know about recent stuff but if you go by the interviews for the 3D Sega Ages series they were personal favorites of the staff or chosen by apparently Japan-only fan surveys.

I went to the Ketsui launch event and it is pretty much one of their staff is a big fan and contacts the rights holder.

I haven’t been able to get into the Strikers 1945 series all that much, but damn do I love the Gunbirds. Strikers feels like Gunbird but more muted and brown (especially the sequels). What nuances am I missing?

Sonic Wings Special is very good. I like the dolphin pilot and the tiny landmarks (central park!).

The squid thing in the Bermuda Triangle stage is really getting on my tits though.

I think Olof might be stealing someone else’s thunderforce.

Ahh this looks lovely though.

Alfa System (shikigami) released a new shooter???

You love to see it. Game looks fun as.

First shooter maybe but they also made the Phantasy Star Portable games, some Tales of the World games, and Oreshika 2 since Shikigami III came out

Whoa I only just found out Qute/M-Kai, developer of Eschatos and one of my all-time favourite STGs, Judgement Silverwsord, finally published the long-delayed Natsuki Chronicles! It came out in Japan at the end of 2019. Looks like it’s coming to PS4/Steam in the West at some point this year, hopefully soon?
