the sb tokusatsu thread

Just saw Shin Ultraman. It’s not the revelation that Shin Godzilla was but it’s a lot of fun.

I just saw Shin Ultraman tonight with an English dub. Mostly a good movie if a little overstuffed but felt like watching a week’s worth of episodes in one go. With the Shin title I was expecting something with a little more bite to it. Ultraman should be a hopeful experience but I was hoping for a stronger commentary.

I half expected the movie to stay on the thread where Ultraman had become an icon of terror but shifted to another plot thread two other times.

Music was on point though. Great 60/70s era beats during the first few tussles and then getting more modern as it goes.

I too finally saw Shin Ultraman this week, subbed, with my kid who was giddy about it and easily the youngest person there by a decade. In short, I thought it was great and want to watch it again to pick up some more stuff; I think Shin Godzilla is probably the better movie for most people, but Ultranerd me super got into this one.

I wrote more about it over on Hinge Problems.

Yeah, I can’t honestly say it needs to be a different movie but I just wish some ideas it had were given just a little more time like seeing Ultraman find his understanding of humanity or explore his identity in the alien society he finds himself in and how he finds inspiration in it.

I also feel the SSSP team could’ve brainstormed a few more unconventional kaiju plans. The electronic nerd in me was appaled they didn’t even toy with the idea of lightning rods or a big chaff bomb to interfere with that one kaijus electrobeam.

Get thee to the Ultraseven, definitely.

It’s been on my list for a while but it was the one that kept dodging streaming platforms when Ultraman was getting dumped in a lot of places. I now see its just on Shoutfactory’s streaming site in all its glory so I guess I’m now ready.

Yeah, they have most of the original run of the show at least up through Leo.

the ultraman blurays are all dirt cheap too (compared to buying 70s and 80s anime at least)

i watched the first episode of kamen rider black sun last night. holy shit, it’s a video nasty superhero show! also, it’s got monster lives matter novement led by japanese greta thunberg?!

I’m glad they’re available and affordable but I’ve heard some legit complaints about the video and sub quality on some shows. I heard the Ultraman anime The Ultraman had almost HK level subtitles and the Gridman subs were the same subs floating around that were on some streaming sites with no touch ups.

i don’t know about the ultraman, but the subs for gridman are the ones tsuburaya had on their youtube channel a couple of years ago.

they’re not great, but being able to legally own tokusatsu is still exciting enough for me to over look it.

they’re not universally bad, either: i have the ultra q and ultra galaxy mega monster battle sets and those are both fine

Yeah, I’ve heard the core shows meet package standards. Just the weird off shoots I’m more curious of seem to get less QC.

Yeah, they were clearance priced at Best Buy when I was there like two weeks back. I highly recommend those sets.

And I watched the officially subbed Gridman (the original, not that newer anime) back in 2020 and they seemed ok as someone who has no idea what the actual dialogue is.

I think they could say shit and some other things that don’t happen on Super Human Samurai Syber Squad

from what i remember, there’s a few more swear words and "jesus!"es than you’d expect from such a clean and wholesome trio of 90s kids

cosmic fury seems to have fully original costumes for the american version and also the first main female red. i think only the zord fights will be japanese footage before hasbro moves over to just not adapting sentai at all the next season

a shame to throw away the continuity for now but at least when toei didn’t have to worry about power rangers it gave us the sheer fucking wildness that is donbrothers

Wasn’t there a lady red ranger in one of the ninja shows? I’m only aware because she was added to the Battle for the Grid at some point.

yeah there was one on power rangers samurai and one on spd but neither of them were the “main” ones
