I was looking into this a little while back. It looks great. I’ve been waiting for the price to drop on it for a while.

Discotek biting the bullet to get us official toku in the home video market. i was at one of their panels where they said that toku titles were a very low performer for them but I hope they can keep this up. I would like to see B-Fighter some day.

it’s a shame they region lock everything, but it’s better than nothing i guess

apparently Starfish Hitler is the breakout star for the kamen rider series with “animal x historical villain” as an enemy theme but i’m truly delighted to find out about Ant Capone

Many years ago I was trying to explain the Government of Darkness across a crowded table at a Taco Bell and one of my friends got up in arms and yelled “That’s it!” as soon as I mentioned Starfish Hitler.

Recently I watched both Zeiram movies. They kinda feel like what we would have gotten if someone made a Super Metroid movie, only with a budget low enough that they had to set the whole thing in a regular industrial district. The designs and effects were all pretty good, and I liked the weird soundtrack. My friend read the blurb on the back of the blu ray case and said the plot sounded like the Super Mario Bros movie, and I was like, yeah it kind of has that same vibe to it, but in a good way.

I think both movies have a big pacing issue though. The bumbling electrician guys get way too much screen time, and practically every shot in the film feels like it’s dragged out a few seconds too long, especially in action scenes. Zeiram in the first movie stops being threatening after a while since he mostly just stomps around slowly like a robot frankenstein, and tends to just stand around waiting for the enemy to shoot him, or fires at them at point blank range and completely misses. I feel like there was a big missed opportunity with that big crowd of alien thugs in the second one too. Less comedic bumbling of the two electrians and more of Zeiram graphically taking out the alien dudes one by one would have been cool.

Regardless, would have been cool to have gotten a third movie, especially one that shakes up the formula a bit, maybe showing more of the alien worlds or send Iria after a completely different enemy. I know there’s the anime prequel, but that’s not really the same.

looks like the 30th anniversary special returning MMPR characters are alpha, adam, zack, billy (is this the first time he’s been back from outer space lol), rocky, aisha, kat, and a new character who is trini’s daughter. wonder if jason didn’t come back because of the fradulent pandemic loan stuff. because he has been in recent stuff.

and i guess after this and cosmic fury they are closing the original canon and starting the new “netflix canon” with all american footage and aimed at “an older audience”. which i assume will last until they randomly decide to bring back some original cast in a gimmick. I mean they already established a multiverse with RPM and Dino Charge existing on separate earths that are connected to the morphing grid and those characters have no trouble popping up so.

isn’t austin st john currently in prison?

augh gross, i thought this was going to be a seperate thing that ran alongside proper power rangers like the 2017 movie. i remember the disney era (of all things) feeling like it was aiming for a slightly older audience, but maybe it just had slightly better dialogue than what had gone before it? i remember saying at the time that dino thunder felt more like buffy the vampire slayer than it did mighty morphin. i feel like if they just pushed the ninja storm-rpm style a little further, they’d have a good balance.

it especially sucks that they’re doing it after recent seasons have been winning awards for lgbt representation in kids media.

i am fascinated by RPM because it was like a disney animation writer in a different version of trying to make PR appeal to an older audience. and it worked out great in the final product like his run on RPM has maybe the most appeal from like a “actually caring about the story and dialogue” of a power rangers show perspective. like the meta jokes were cute but the bizarrely taken seriously post apocalyptic setting was really interesting and well done. i guess he micromanaged too much or went over budget or whatever which led to him getting kicked off as showrunner. i guess he went on to story edit and produce the walking dead so i guess he just likes the post apocalypse.

i knew kamen rider black sun was out, i didn’t know i could just legally stream it

what a time to be alive

i think the general consensus is that there are no bad showa riders. but i dunno

i just finished reading the power rangers/godzilla crossover comics, and these two teams made cameos on the final page, as rita and her underlings are left falling through inter-dimensional space. (there’s also various different versions of godzilla visible. surprisingly not shin or hanna barbera though)

in contrast to amazon releasing kamen rider black sun, netflix are apparently continuing their weird habit of making cgi cartoons out of tokusatsu properties.

weird confluence of live action saint seiya stuff
