So I’ve been trying to take in a bunch of this stuff lately. It’s all good times to varying degrees, but holy shit is Kamen Rider Stronger something special. This first episode doesn’t fuck around at all.

The Gamera movies have all just been recently re-released on bluray so I picked up the Heisei trilogy set and finally got to see them for the first time. I can definitely see why people call them the best of the kaiju genre, the effects are a cut above even the first few Godzilla Millenium series films and the plots are much more serious and gritty than the typical Godzilla. They almost feel like a precursor to Shin Godzilla in how they deal with the politics involved in Japan mobilizing the JSDF etc. Gamera himself seems to have a lot less personality than Godzilla though IMO, he mostly just shows up, fights the monsters and then leaves.

I got the 3 movie set over the 4 movie set because it was $40 cheaper. Not sure if I’m missing out on anything with Gamera The Brave, and I haven’t seen any of the Showa films. What do people here think about the Gamera series?

i have no actual insight into this, but it feels like with godzilla, they come up with a cool opponent monster, then come up with a reason for that mnoster to exist, while with (heisei) gamera they write a big sci-fi action blockbuster that happens to be about big monsters fighting

also, i think the 90s might be a special high point for special effects. the gamera movies look amazing, as do the godzilla movies from that time. and there’s other stuff like yamato takeru with its amazing eight-headed, fire-breathing dragon.

biollante is probably the best monster effect of all time, though that came out in 1989

this is exactly what i did, for the exact same reason lol

i’m hoping with these kamen rider uploads, toei aren’t going to do the thing they did with all their other uploads, where they stop subbing after two episodes (people have speculated that this is becuse they’re using old scripts that they would have made decades ago for use in trying to sell the shows to western tv markets)

tsuburaya are doing a better job, uploading tons of stuff, all with english subs, but they have another annoying habit where they only leave episodes up for 2 weeks. like, i want to just link people to gridman as a recommendation, but because they can’t watch from the beginning, they’re put off.

Actually haven’t heard of this one, is it a remake of a showa film? I think there was one from the 60s based on the dragon orochi and other Japanese legends that I had been meaning to see

yes! there was a dub released in the us on vhs as orochi the eight headed dragon

I was really hoping Shin Godzilla would kick off a new Godzilla series just to see how many movies it took to get to Spacegodzilla levels of silliness, but a Hideako Anno Shin- series of various franchises sounds just as good

a warning for everyone in the high grade thread: if you fall asleep while putting together your plamo, you may be drafted into the schoolgirl laser death match war (if you die in the dream, you may or may not die in real life)

I think I liked the 3rd one more for plot, but the 2nd one was better for monster fights
