The Renga Game

I’m going to organize a second game on June 1st. It will be a variation on the first game’s rules. Additionally, I’ll change procedures so that

  1. All steps and addressees will be communicated once we begin (meaning you will know who to send your part to as soon as you write it)

  2. No poem will have two parts from the same individual (that was my mistake in the first game)

Stay tuned!

Game 2: June
It is time for another game of Renga. Maybe I should change the name to something more memorable…or maybe the name will attain memorability through experience.

Each time we play this game, I want to change the rules. This is not only an excuse or me to practice writing poetry. It’s also an excuse for me to practice game design.

June’s Rule
When a player suggests a theme for a poem, they must also attach a list of five words which cannot be used by any writer working with that theme.

Here is an example and my theme for Game 2.

Theme: paper
Censored words:

  • ink
  • words
  • fold
  • tree
  • white

Once again, supply your own theme and list to enter into Game 2. I will tumble everyone’s names together on 2024-06-09T03:59:00Z.

Sneezing, shivering
Walking, sopping — cannot rest
For all things must rise

The pollen is washed away
Tomorrow morning is blessed

The powers that be,
Reign over my sinuses,
For the entire spring.

HELL YEAH

between cups of tea
under old wisteria
three of us once laughed

along with the faint wind chimes
and under warm, dappled sun

the dappled goddess
we all turned to green pigeons
clusters of fragrance

little hairy imps

capering about

here the milk to acetone
there the woodchuck tinsel-crowned

the class action lawsuit against
the keebler elves begins

Phew! I think I’ve sent out the correct directions to everyone who is joining game 2. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

still memories, dusty books
